Book Description

Beware and Warning!

This book is different from other books.

You and YOU ALONE are in charge of what happens in this story.

There are dangers, choices, adventures, and consequences. YOU must use all of your numerous talents and much of your enormous intelligence. The wrong decision could end in disaster - even death. But, don't despair. At any time, YOU can go back and make another choice, alter the path of your story, and change its result.

You and your best friend Carlos have traveled to Nepal in search of the fabled Yeti or abominable snowman. Last year while the two of you were mountain climbing in South America, a guide told you about the legendary creature and you haven't stopped thinking about the Yeti since. Carlos arrived and went straight into the mountains when a Yeti sighting was reported. He hasn't been heard from in three days. A late monsoon storm has moved in and the mountains are almost impassable. You know Carlos will depend on you to do the right thing. But what is it?

Editorial Reviews

Review

After a brief hiatus from the presses, the venerable series is back and moving into the 21st century. Founder R.A. Montgomery started the Choose Your Own Adventure series with 'The Abominable Snowman.' Each book is written in the second-person and you play the role of the main character. Readers are given choices and decide on a course by turning to different pages. Each book has many possible endings and side stories, some with over 100 variations. Furthermore, you can continue reading until you attain a favorable ending if you, as this author did in his first read, die in your first attempt. --Blast Magazine, January 1, 2007 --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

More About the Author

R.A. Montgomery is an avid adventurer, first and foremost. Whether in the mountains, or on the sea, or in explorations of the mind, he has found adventure in every aspect of his life. Teaching school, working in the administration of a top university, hiking in the Himalayas, or working in the Peace Corps in Africa, Montgomery has taken making choices seriously. Montgomery says, "There is never a day in which you are not confronted with choice. Some seemingly small choices can determine the path of the rest of your life. CYOA gave me a vehicle for examining all the impacts of choice."

He was born in Greenwich, Connecticut in 1936. One of his first memories is sitting in his high chair and being frightened of Jell-O, which he thought was alive. He attended Hopkins Grammar School, the oldest private school in the country (founded in 1660), and Williston Academy. He got his college degree from Williams in 1958, and did graduate school at Yale and NYU.

Choose Your Own Adventure® books reflect his diverse interests and values. Montgomery states, "More than anything else, everyone should have the freedom to express themselves. Second to that, everyone should take risks and be willing to fail. Picking yourself up off the mat is the central business of life."

Today R.A. Montgomery lives in north central Vermont, where he is CEO of the small publishing house that has re-introduced the CYOA series. He travels frequently to Asia and Europe. Although his technical climbing days are kaput.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun, Old Time Read on the Kindle, December 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Back in the middle ages when I went to school the Choose Your Own Adventures came out. It was a perfect time for me and our school library couldn't keep the books on the shelves. This is the first book in the series and it is a joy on the Kindle. The navigation was easy, the pictures were all there, and the feeling of reading the book remained. I'm not sure I'll be buying the other books on the Kindle though. This was a kind of kitsch purchase for me. A fun walk down memory lane, but like other children books, not something I need to re-read or spend a lot of money on.

If you're like me and read these books as a kid and have a Kindle as an adult it's worth the couple of bucks to snag one. If you can trust your kids with a Kindle then they will probably enjoy this as well. And lastly, if you want a history of interactivity, then you would want to buy one of these as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Choosing your own adventure= so fun!, January 3, 2007
Wow! This book is great. I remember the Choose Your Own Adventure series were some of the only books I would actually borrow from our elementery school library. It's awesome that they have kept the same stories while giving them new updated covers and artwork. I would definitely reccomend this book for any kid 7 and up, or any adult who read the series as a child. These books really made me want to read as a kid because they let you choose your own story. The Abominable Snowman is probably one of the best ones, the endings are really creative.

2.0 out of 5 stars Choose Your Own Adventure - Abominable Snowman Kindle Version is Abominable, January 5, 2010

Downloaded the Kindle version as a fun bedtime story for my child. The first couple pages had typos "...climbing in South American", "but what is is?" Further, the instructions say, "If you don't like your choice, press PREVIOUS PAGE to go back and decide again." When we selected PREV PAGE, it went to a different thread of the book instead of the choice page, as it should have done. Improvements would be great as these were really fun stories to read when I was a child, but the problems with the Kindle version put a damper on my enthusiasm.
