This book has two main concerns. The first is to isolate the fundamental issues that must be resolved if one is able to formulate a defensible position on the question of the morality of abortion. The second is to determine the most plausible stand on those issues. The issues are intellectually difficult and many of them have been more or less ignored in public debate on abortion. Tooley argues, however, that plausible answers can be advanced, and that they support a liberal position on the morality of abortion.

Abortion and Infanticide (Oxford: Claredon, 1983) This is a careful philosophical exploration of the concepts and moral arguments concerning the practices of abortion and infanticide. Tooley takes the position that there is no moral offense in ending a human life up to about 3 months after birth because earlier than that the infant has not yet become a person. His exploration of personhood might be the most original part of the book. This man is the devil. Not only should we allow abortions, but kill any baby that doesn't meet a standard? Even at two years old? One can only imagine what Michael Tooley is thinking. Too bad his parents did not share the same views!
