Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Billed as a comprehensive guide, this disc contains 20,000 pages of text, 200 slides, 500 graphics, plus audio and video that is gleaned from a variety of sources ranging from popular and scholarly periodicals to reports from the surgeon general and many other government-generated documents. For menu/ browsing access it's divided into three sections: medicine, ethics, and law, but it's not easy to locate specific material this way?you'll need to go into "search" and do some Boolean rummaging to find articles on particular topics. That said, you will find a wealth of material (both bibliographic and full-text) on the disc supporting both the pros and cons of abortion rights. We found the medical material too technical to follow (it's targeted at healthcare professionals, not the layperson), but the ethics and law sections are accessible and useful. The software is not flashy; in fact, it's pretty bare bones. It does get the search job done, however. Bottom Line: At this price, the disc is for the serious abortion library researcher. Note well that medical graphics are explicit and not for the squeamish.

Review

“...you will find a wealth of material (both bibliographic and full-text) on the disc supporting both the pros and cons of abortion rights.”–Library Journal

“This disc will be welcomed by libraries....Students in high school and college will love the one-stop shopping at research time.”–ARBA

“[This] CD-ROM efficiently combines text, photographs, video, audio and movies in a compelling teaching tool.”–LA Daily Journal

“The final section on Law, like the section on Medicine, provides a thorough handling of relevant issues....This CD-ROM has many strengths. I believe that its foremost strengths are its comprehensive nature and its objectivity. It would take hundreds of books and articles to provide the information included in this single source....This objectivity provides a well-balanced examination of abortion and reproductive rights....It also has an excellent search engine which provides for both basic and boolean searches....I highly recommend it for use by scholars, those in the medical and legal professions, ethicists, both group and opponents to abortion, and those who simply wish to know more about abortion and reproductive rights.”–H-Net Reviews

“The content appears balanced, with views expressed on both sides of this difficult issue....The CD-ROM's simple interface makes it easy to navigate....Because this collection has gone through several revisions already, this CD-ROM appears to contain a useful and balanced body of information.”–VOYA
