Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Since getting an abortion may be daunting in some parts of the country--"84 percent of counties have no provider," Kaufmann avers--this well-organized book's advice seems ripe for the times. That counsel includes warnings about fake clinics "run by antichoice organizations for the sole purpose of actively obstructing women's access to abortion," the potential for confrontation at clinic sites, and the legal sanctions and hoops one must negotiate in pursuit of an abortion (Kaufmann gives detailed instructions on circumventing parental notification laws, informed consent laws, and waiting periods). Kaufmann says she writes specifically "to provide women with the support and clear practical information they need to get an abortion regardless of their personal situation or the laws, lack of clinics, or level of antichoice violence in their state," and her writing shares the stridency and clarity of that point of view. Appendixes list pertinent laws and pro-choice organizations state by state and include sample legal forms. Reviewed during the writing by doctors and other professionals, this is an excellent choice on its subject. Mike Tribby

Review

Gloria Feldt President, Planned Parenthood The Abortion Resource Handbook is a unique and valuable aid for woman who are faced with the need to exercise their constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy. It provides meaningful and comprehensive medical and psychological information clearly and concisely. Perhaps more importantly, it offers humane guidance for any woman who is forced to navigate the political, social, and extremist obstacles that have been put in place to thwart her fundamental, moral right to choose.

This important resource also provides invaluable insights for women and men who want to understand the issue of abortion at its most human, practical, and compelling level.

It may be the most important single book yet written for women who choose abortion, their parents, friends, and counselors.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent resource for anyone considering an abortion., December 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Abortion Resource Handbook (Paperback)
This book is an excellent resource for not only anyone considering an abortion, but also anyone in the helping professions who is in the position of referring clients for abortions. The information and advice is clear, realistic, and reassuring. It is a resource that women have needed for a long time, I would encourage anyone facing an unplanned pregnancy to utilize it.

Even if you're very young, poor, alone, afraid or living in the boondocks, Kaufmann provides the resources to exercise your constitutionally protected right to abortion. The very personal decisions you make concerning your reproductive choices are honored.

1.0 out of 5 stars Infanticide Propaganda, August 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: The Abortion Resource Handbook (Paperback)
I flipped through this book and was amazed at the lies they wrote, i.e.: "The pamphlets are filled with inaccurate and distorted information, such as entirely false claims that an 11-week-old fetus can feel pain...". An 11-week-old fetus has eyes, ears, fingers, toes, nose, mouth, heartbeat, hair, fingernails, genitalia, and spinal column. Logic would tell us that all resembles a "human". For further confirmation, check out "A Child is Born" by Lennart Nilsson.

This book also makes the choice of abortion look like something that every woman should experience as a rite of passage. Example: Lucy, a girl who decided to get an abortion in college, said she was "proud of the first real choice she ever made" since her parents had always "made all of her choices for her". An unusual example of being independent. Next time, move to an uncharted island in the South Pacific and live off the land.
