Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Various species of North American birds fly, swim and run across the pages of this picture-book field guide. for beginning birders. Lucid text provides basic information on general bird habits--"Birds may flock together"; "Birds use their bills to gather food"--while lifelike watercolors offer visual clues to their natural habitats. The crisp illustrations carefully highlight the physical markings and relative sizes of birds for easy identification in the wild. For more advanced readers, a succinct afterword repeats the illustrations in black-and-white miniature and expands the book's text with more specific data. This volume is a true treat for the ecologically minded and especially for budding ornithologists. Ages 3-8.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Exceptionally detailed and uniformly accurate watercolors are each accompanied by a line of descriptive text that offers one straightforward fact about birds: ``Birds have feathers.'' ``Birds travel in different ways.'' ``Most birds fly,'' ``but some swim,'' ``and others run.'' Many are species young people are likely to encounter (Canada goose and American robin), while others (the greater roadrunner or the great horned owl) may be more difficult to locate. The illustrations depict the birds in their appropriate habitats. An afterword adds slightly more detailed information about each species, including the sizes of the nine birds. Little else on this subject exists at such a young level and the Sills succeed admirably in offering a basic introduction to the unique characteristics of birds. Minor quibbles: sometimes only the male of the species is shown, at others both sexes are pictured; in neither instance are readers given any aid in determining gender. In spite of these problems, most librarians will find this a priority purchase since it will fill a niche in their collections. --Ellen Fader, Westport Public Library, CT

I looked around a lot for a bird book for my son/his dad who love to watch the birds together. I purchased this after reading another review so I felt that I should give my own. Considering how difficult this book was to find, it was definetly worth the wait. My son is 21 months and just loves reading the "Birdee Book". The pictures are beautiful and the written text is short and sweet which is perfect for young children. I also feel that it is doing a great job of teaching him the difference between birds in the sense that there are ducks, geese, birds, etc.. and prior to this book all of them were just "Birds". I would recommend this for any child above 18 months.

Fantastic book for toddlers to introduce birds. We have several of the Audubon plush birds that play the real bird calls, and our daughter loves to read this book with "her" birds. The whole series of books is excellent; highly recommend amphibians, reptiles, mammals, etc.

Don't be dismayed by the few words - each caption carries a complete idea that will spark more questions and thinking, especially as it relates to the beautiful picture. The additional information in the back extends each idea, with challenging vocabulary and will encourage comparative thinking. It may seem simple to an adult, but it's spot on for a young child who is interested in birds.

A really fine book for children. Highly satisfying for beginning readers.

We recently bought this book for our 15-month old nature fanatic, and he loves the illustrations as much as we do! It is so delightful to finally find a series that has artful, accurate illustrations accompanied by text that is simple enough to hold our little one's interest. I plan to buy more books from this series and certainly recommend this book to anyone that loves birds, art, and/or nature.

Follow-on review: Our son is now 24-months old and still loves this book. It really is a treasure - you won't be dissapointed!

As a former elementary educator, I cannot say too many excellent things about this book. My two year old great-grandaughter loves it. Anyone who wants a book that will introduce children to birds will find a winner with this book. The illustrations are fantastic. The simple information on each page is just enough to provide introductory facts that capture a child's attention and desire to know more. They will develop an awareness of birds and nature. A gift every chid should receive.

I bought this book for my 6 year old grandson. We enjoy watching birds and I want him to start labeling them, not just saying "that's a bird". This simple book also has few activities for youngsters to do with an adult, like a bird feeder. The explanations are simple and to the point and the illustrations are well done.
I recommend this book not only for kids, but for adults starting birding or enjoying them with their grand kids.
