Book Description

May 1, 2006
Incredibly, millions of African American women are losing their hair. What's even more remarkable about this finding is that it's the conditioned behavior (namely, the pursuit of straight hair) that's causing them to suffer their misfortune! As I am well aware of the fact that any Black infatuation with having straight hair is a late phenomenon, I have little choice but to try to address this matter. Yet, at the outset let me say that I won't be brow-beating African American women for sho'nuff not wanting to have "Nappy-Hair." Rather, I shall attempt to bring some perspective to the subject of Black hair. Accordingly, I shall employ four spheres of study in this discussion; i.e., history, anatomy, spirituality, and psychology. In closing, it is my hope that the ensuing pages about Black hair will not only prove life affirming-but useful . . .

3.0 out of 5 stars The History of Locks, October 7, 2008
By
The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com and BlackBookReviews.net) - See all my reviews
This review is from: About Black Hair (Paperback)
When I cracked open the pages of ABOUT BLACK HAIR, my expectations were totally different from what I actually gleaned from the pages. I was looking for information on how to care for and nurture it, regardless of styling options. To me, the beauty of African-American tresses is the versatility and various styles and textures we choose to wear. Each style whether natural, chemically straightened or colored, with proper care, can be healthy. What I received from information praises locks as the only healthy option for black hair.

R. L. Worthy is a historian who was moved to pen this book based on the number of African-American women who are losing their hair. I understand this is a very real concern, but I do not agree that our only option is to grow locks. If a woman finds that chemicals are too harsh to maintain a healthy head of hair, there are more options for going natural than locks. I felt that Worthy could have explored those style options if he was opposed to the use of chemicals and colors. I also disagree with the author's stance that women straighten their hair so that it will grow long. Many women straighten and color their hair, yet cut it short, which is an attractive alternative, and which expresses their individuality.

Worthy shares a lot of the history of the hairstyles worn by ancient Egyptians, as well as the spiritual aspects of the styles they maintained. He also offers interesting biological facts pertaining to the makeup and growth patterns of black hair. Although the material is informative, it was limited to those who are only interested in one styling option - locks.
