Editorial Reviews

Review

From the USA comes another book on boomerangs. But this is definitely different than most others. It is called Bout Boomerangs, America's Silent Sport and is written by Kelly Boyer Sagert. Yes, folks, we have a boomerang book written by a woman . . . and a left hander at that! And to add to the surprises, she has not been throwing boomerangs very long.

So, what does a left-handed neophyte female thrower bring to the sport? A marvellous book that is fresh in its approach. It is hard bound and full of beautiful clear photos, as well as being highly readable. It gives a comprehensive look at the major parties involved in the sport in the USA today, and is up to date. It even has Adam Ruhf's last Endurance effort.

It is not a book that analyses shapes and designs and flaps and weights, but it does analyse the people and what makes them tick. We experience their philosophies on boomerang throwing. It certainly helps you realize why the USA is such a force in the boomerang world these days.

One chapter deals with overseas throwers. Another great glimpse at these people. Those outside the USA are only sorry she hasn't given more coverage to more overseas personalities. Maybe one day she will. It is full of information for the modern day enthusiast with such things as magazines and internet sources. This is a real must for boomerang collectors.

It is a near-perfect book. I would say the weakest chapter (and it is only made up of one page) is Making Your Own Boomerang. This could have been clearer and diagrams would definitely have helped. But don't let it worry you, since most of you readers out there already know how to make a boomerang!

Catchy poems (mostly by Bud Pell) are spread throughout the book, too.

If you are looking for a good present for someone, then this book is it. -- Brother Brian Thomas, Australian National Team Coach

Kelly Boyer Sagert has written a marvelous new book about boomerangs titled Bout Boomerangs, America's Silent Sport. Kelly has captured the culture of the contemporary boomerang movement by interviewing a host of prominent throwers and exporting this knowledge into an entertaining and enlightening portrayal of what it is like "to be an enthusiastic boomerang competitor." This book doesn't stop there. Other topics include: history of the boomerang; competition records, how to make and throw boomerangs; boomerang art & science; and more. The book is hard cover and attractively illustrated in color with lots of photographs of boomerang designs and highly skilled boomerang throwers in action. The book is "must reading" for anyone interested in the sport of boomerang throwing. ... -- Ted Bailey, Editor, Boomerang News

From the Publisher

Not only provides a vivid portrayal of the sport but also conveys the spirit and pure joy of the act of throwing "the stick that returns" as shared by throwers and collectors around the world.

More About the Author

Kelly Boyer Sagert, a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), Author's Guild and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has sold over 1,000 pieces of her writing to magazines, newspapers, online sites, encyclopedias and literary journals. Her first play, Freedom's Light: A Stop Along the Underground Railroad, (sponsored by the Lorain County Metro Parks), received excellent reviews, including:

"Lorain's Kelly Boyer Sagert concocted "Freedom's Light: A Stop Along the Underground Railroad." It's an engrossing account of a one woman's journey from slavery in the South to freedom right in Lorain County via the legendary Underground Railroad (which, of course, has nothing to do with locomotives or tunnels).

Sagert's ear for colloquial dialogue matches her command of American and Ohio history and her heart for looking inside an African American woman and the spirit of black and white Americans who fought for freedom." (Lorain Morning Journal, May 4, 2009)

Sagert has written nine books and is under contract for another book. She has contributed material to more than one dozen other books, including chapter 4 of Colonial America: From Settlement to Revolution by ABC-Clio.

Her books include:
* Flappers (Greenwood Publishing, 2009)
* FabJob Guide to Become a Freelance Writer (FabJob, 2009)
* FabJob Guide to Become a Fitness Club Owner (FabJob, 2009)
* Encyclopedia of Extreme Sports (Greenwood Publishing, 2008)
* American Pop Culture Through History: The 1970s (Greenwood Publishing, 2006)
* FabJob Guide to Become A Funeral Director (FabJob, 2005)
* All-Time Greatest Hitters: Joe Jackson (Greenwood Publishing, 2004), a look at one of the most talented--and controversial--athletes of our century
* Birth of Illumination (2001), a work-for-hire book about the rise of the public library system in Toni Morrison's hometown
* 'Bout Boomerangs: America's Silent Sport (PlantSpeak Publications, 1996), which the Australian boomerang coach called "nearly perfect"

This magazine, which profiled the art, history, intriguing people and fascinating places along Lake Erie's shores, was nominated by Writer's Digest for their "Top 100 Award" in 1998 and 1999. She served as the contributing editor for the Southern Ohio edition of Over the Back Fence as well, and she also edited five trade magazines and numerous business directories, community guides and travel planners for the company.

Boyer Sagert currently works fulltime as a writer, editor and speaker. She writes biographical and educational material for encyclopedias and other anthologies, including publications put out by Macmillan and Gale Group, Charles Scribner's Sons, ME Sharpe, Harvard University Press, Oxford University Press, University of Indiana Press and Facts on File. She also writes marketing materials for a wide variety of companies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A unique, informative, and entertaining book., July 29, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: About Boomerangs, America's Silent Sport (Hardcover)
This is a marvelous book for either the uninitiated or for the veteran boomeranger. I knew almost nothing about them, but I wanted to buy one for my son. I obtained the boomerang and the book at the same time, and I was delighted with Sagert's approach. She not only gives practical instruction in the sport of throwing boomerangs, she combines this with a full history of the device, and she also links it with culture and society. A great collection of photographs and oversized format make this a perfect all-in-one volume for anyone with even the most casual interest. Most surprising is the fact that Sagert is not herself a competitive boomeranger. Her observations are objective and designed to be accessible and entertaining. This is an unique volume, in short, one that is sure to please as a gift or for personal pleasure. In fact, most people will want more than one copy, I'm sure, after they see their first disappearing under the arm of some thrower who strives to perfect the discipline of boomeranging

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that will have you returning again and again!, August 18, 1997

'Bout Boomerangs, America's Silent Sport: History, Heroes and How to
by Kelly B. Sagert

I found that Kelly's book offers a unique presentation of information coupled with a fresh, new twist to writing styles.
She has managed to provide interesting facts and data about boomerangs in such a way as to make the reader feel that he or she is involved in a conversation with the author.

The reader is mentally taken back in time to experience the thrill of the primitive boomerang hunt, as well as being able to understand the challenge of modern day competition.

I've rarely come across non-fiction books of this type that have accomplished the task of making me feel as though I was being told an interesting story while learning about a subject that is new to me.

I anxiously await future books written by Ms. Sagert

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I HAD IN MIND!, September 12, 2009

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: About Boomerangs, America's Silent Sport (Hardcover)
This book is mainly about people who throw boomerangs as a sport. I was hoping that
it had more to do about boomerangs. It does have a chapter with pictures of
boomerangs as art.
So don't buy this book if you only want to learn how to make boomerangs, or want
a history of them from different cultures.
