4.0 out of 5 stars Soulful Country, But Really Just Good Music
I'm About To Come Alive is David Nail's debut CD, and he has set a pretty high bar for future releases. While country is not my main genre of music, I know that I like this CD. 3.0 out of 5 stars Solid album from pop/country singer
David Nail offers up this collection of songs in a well-produced, radio-friendly album. Nail has a solid voice that gels with the songs and the pop-country-rock genre. While this is a solid effort I found it lacking in originality and missing enough hooks in most of the songs to make the music truly memorable. 4.0 out of 5 stars Soulful Country, But Really Just Good Music, August 29, 2009
This review is from: I'm About To Come Alive (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I'm About To Come Alive is David Nail's debut CD, and he has set a pretty high bar for future releases. While country is not my main genre of music, I know that I like this CD. Nail sings in a smooth tenor that is very expressive and earnest. He is at his best on the slower, bluesy tracks such as "I'm About To Come Alive" and "Clouds". Both of those songs also benefit from the background vocals of Natalie Hemby. She lends her voice to five of the 11 tracks, and she and Nail produce very good harmonies on the choruses of these songs. What makes this CD is the genuineness of Nail's delivery whether he is singing about relationships as on the songs already mentioned or about more general topics such as a yearning for specific places as on "Mississippi" and "Missouri" or chasing his dreams on "Again". He sings in a way that one cannot help but know that these songs mean something to him. This CD also avoids falling into an instrumental rut. The opener "Mississippi" features a nice string accompaniment while "Looking For A Good Time", "This Time Around", and "Missouri" all have Hammond B-3 Organ.

All in all, I suppose that I'm About To Come Alive has to be slotted in the Country genre, but I would put it in the more general category of plain old good music. David Nail has given us a CD that is worthy of the attention of all music fans. I have thoroughly enjoyed this CD, and I think that you will too.

4.0 out of 5 stars David Nail Comes Alive, July 12, 2010

This review is from: I'm About To Come Alive (Audio CD)
Country newcomer David Nail's MCA Nashville debut album, I'm About To Come Alive has finally arrived after much delay and not a moment too soon. At a time when the music industry is more interested in turning out paint-by-numbers hit singles instead of investing in career artists, Nail's collection of non-traditional country songs is more than just a little refreshing. No, this ain't your daddy's country music. Instead it is a fresh take on contemporary country that has a warm, inviting feeling that makes you want to crank up your car stereo and go on a road trip, or dial up your iPod and let the real world melt away as the lyrics blur the lines between fantasy and reality.

This is not a random selection of songs trying to become digital downloads, but instead it is an album of music that takes the listener on a journey. It is an album to be listened to in its entirety from beginning to end. However, that is not to say that there are not singles to found here, such as the previous hit "Red Light" that was recently iTunes' free single of the week that got country fans ears' buzzing about this new artist and anxiously awaiting this release. That song is here along with Nail's version of rock band Train's "I'm About To Come Alive," which served as the lead release and became the album's title track.
Nail and producer Frank Liddell (Miranda Lambert, Lee Ann Womack) have crafted a new template for what today's country artists should strive to achieve, which is to make solid, consistent albums with no filler.

From the smooth opening of "Mississippi" to the Miranda Lambert duet "Strangers On A Train," and all the way through the closing of Nail's own heart-wrenching "Missouri," I'm About To Come Alive not only keeps the listener's attention, but commands it by the balanced mix of ballads and up tempo tunes included here.
David Nail may have taken his own sweet time to deliver one of this year's best and most solid releases, but just one listen proves it was well worth the wait. If this is any indication of the standard of albums we can expect from David Nail in the future, then he should be making music for a long time to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Had an old country sound and all songs were slow, September 16, 2009
This review is from: I'm About To Come Alive (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This entire album was slow and had the feel of old time country music. He has a beautiful voice, no doubt, but there is not one up beat song on the entire album. You could slow dance to every one. I like a mixture of up beat and slow songs on an album, so this one just wasn't for me. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the slow songs, but if you aren't a fan of older country or you don't enjoy slow songs, this one probably isn't for you.

While this is a solid effort I found it lacking in originality and missing enough hooks in most of the songs to make the music truly memorable. Nail has a lot of potential, and with development of more originality and inclusion of more memorable songs he could become a major country music star.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Solid Album Start to Finish, September 24, 2009

I found this album to be solid from start to end with all tracks but one receiving either 4 or 5 stars. My least favorite track, which I gave 3 stars, was the title track. The title track wasn't bad, per se, but Train performs it much better and I'm at a loss as to why David Nail would pick "I'm About to Come Alive" as his title track when he had so many other, outstanding and original works to choose from. This is a minor complaint against a truly outstanding album and there are very few albums that I want to own every single track on the album and this is one of them.

"Red light" is one of the best songs in years. The video was a fantastic surprise; I love NOT seeing every redneck country singer in a pickup truck, on a farm. That was a brave choice that I know he took some Hell for.
Not only are the lyrics amazing, but David Nail has such an incredible voice, that how he sings the songs make you get a lump in your throat listening. It's that moving.
All the songs are good, but Red Light is a Home Run! So is "I'm about to come alive", but I was just knocked out by this singer. He should have a long career ahead.

I couldn't find this CD at my local stores, even though David Nail is from my hometown. So I turned to Amazon.com and ordered it there, received it within a very short time and have enjoyed it ever since. It is a fantastic CD that has not been out of my CD player since I got it. I would recommend it to anyone; and Amazon.com was the vehicle of choice for me and will be again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of heart and soul, September 16, 2009
This review is from: I'm About To Come Alive (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
David Nail is a man worth listening to, he has a lot of heart and soul. First listened to on a quiet Sunday morning, I quickly learned that David is not background music. He's somebody that demands and deserves full attention. David is a complex artist who you want to hear, understand, and enter his world. I couldn't go 5 stars because after my first listen David didn't leave me remembering him from other talented artists ... that is for sure a true talent he doesn't quite possess yet. But such talent is a learned skill and David is on the right track.

5.0 out of 5 stars Country even for People who may not like Country, September 16, 2009

I'm not a big country fan. I don't "feel" the newer artists. They seem too commercial to me. Too much flash and not enough lyrics.
David's debut album is simple but it says it. It's not flashy or hardcore country. It's what I would consider easy listening country.
It's got a lot of feeling behind it. I could listen to this album over and over even though it isn't full of radio friendly hits.
David Nail reminds me of the Band "Train" only country, only better. This is country music and it is not pretentious.
I liked Mississippi, Red Light and I'm About To Come Alive. Check out some of his music on youtube. You won't regret it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting compilation--not sure it can be truly well classified, September 14, 2009
This review is from: I'm About To Come Alive (Audio CD)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
This is a very interesting CD from an artist who almost defies classification. It is found under the Country category but has strong tones of jazz and blues as well as some old fashioned almost rock ballad type songs (maybe southern rock that may sound like country or could cross over).

The 1st and the last songs are my favorites. Strangely they are named after states. I actually liked the words more than the music. Usually when that happens the music grows on me with repeated listening and this one is no exception. "Clouds" will ring true to anyone who ends up in a relationship where they just wonder how they got there after a while. I also like the "Turning Home" piece--gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it.

This is not a rip roaring good ol boy country album. In fact it is almost the antithesis to that. This album is more what I would expect from a singer/songwriter with heavy emphasis on what the music means and how the words speak to you (the audience). That connection that reaches deeper into you than just a 3 minute song to blare out your pickup with the windows down on the way to the lake. I recommend it!
