Are you old enough to remember the 1986 version with Demi Moore and Rob Lowe? I am. It's a story as old as time: We watch two couples make their way from the bar to the bedroom and then come face to face with the real world (with a dining-room table).

Director Steve Pink ("Grosse Pointe Blank" and "High Fidelity") clearly understands the dynamics of the dating game. He knows how important it is to have sympathetic characters, even though they may sometimes misbehave. Audiences want someone to root for.

Here is the updated cast:
* Kevin Hart ("Ride Along") has the old Jim Belushi role of Bernie, the guy who is absolutely determined to limit his dating to one-night stands. I don't remember Belushi being this funny!
* Regina Hall ("The Best Man Holiday") in the old Elizabeth Perkins role, is Joan, Bernie's erstwhile one-night stand. This gal can give as good as she gets and this couple's verbal timing is amazing. What a team!
* Michael Ealy ("Last Vegas") is our new Danny, formerly played by Rob Lowe, who discovers that all he really wants is a home... and maybe a dog. He is a genuinely nice man with all the right instincts.
* Joy Bryant ("Parenthood") is Debbie, formerly played by Demi Moore; Bryant owns this role, with a sweet likability and generous appeal.
* Christopher McDonald (Lots of TV) is Casey, the friendly owner of the faltering neighborhood bar where our folks hang out.

This R-rated comedy (raunchy language and sexual situations) is laugh-out-loud funny and much, much wittier than the original. The dialogue is so rapid-fire I found myself reaching for my remote: ("What was that?" "What did he say?

In the summer of 1986, the original About Last Night debuted to mixed reviews – based on the David Mamet play, Sexual Perversity in Chicago. The film starred familiar “Brat Pack” actors Rob Lowe and Demi Moore in the leading roles of Danny and Debbie, while Jim Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins portrayed Bernie and Joan in support. Eventually, the romance flick went on to achieve an admirable payday of $38.7 million. And, although the Edward Zwick-directed flick was an only an average film, it still has a loyal following – meaning it was only a matter of time before it received a modern facelift.

Continuing the theme of recent 80s remakes (Robocop, Endless Love), About Last Night is directed by Steve Pink (Hot Tub Time Machine) and stars Kevin Hart as Bernie. As the story begins, Bernie is in a bar with his best friend, Danny (Michael Ealy), discussing a one-night stand he had the night before – with Joan (Regina Hall). Bernie also happens to be waiting for Joan to show up to the bar with her friend and roommate, Debbie (Joy Bryant). Both Bernie and Joan spend the evening doing shots and getting as drunk as possible, while Debbie and Danny (on a blind date of sorts) look on in repugnance.

Debbie eventually has to leave, and Danny offers to walk her out. While walking on the street, the pair reveals their general interest in one another, oddly culminating in a one-night stand – thus marking the beginning of a very unconventional romantic relationship. Danny and Debbie continue spending a substantial amount of time with one another – all while Danny keeps her at an emotional arms-length in order to avoid the “relationship” tag. But, over time, Danny asks Debbie to move in to his apartment, and while it’s paradise at first, things become stressed as time progresses.

I loved the original film from the 80's with Rob Lowe and Demi Moore , so I was eager to see how this modern day version compared. There were some very funny moments in this film, thanks to the supporting cast (Kevin Hart and Regina Hall) who carried the film as did the one from the 80's. But what this version lacked was character development with the leading roles- played by Joy Bryant and Michael Ealy. They were both SO boring that you didn't really care if they stayed together or not. I was rooting for their best friends to stay together because they were a cute and crazy couple together. I also would have cast Paula Patton in the LEAD role as Deb, and Adam Rodriguez as Danny. The chemistry would have been hotter and more believable.

About Last Night is a remake of the 1986 film based on David Mamet's play entitled "Sexual Perversity In Chicago". It features two new couples - Bernie and Joan & Danny and Debbie and tells the progress of their romantic relationship from meeting in the bar into becoming lovers.

While the cast can be engaging in some scenes,I felt that the movie tried so hard to be funny that results the comedic scenes to be over-the-top.The squabbles of Bernie and Joan gets irritating as the movie progresses.Too bad that Kevin Hart and Regina Hall overact most of the time and their raunchiness can be a huge turn off for a lot of viewers.Another reason not to really like this movie is the lack of story telling as the couples mainly go through endless conversations with not so much going on in the story.

Too bad that it could have been a better film if it tries to address what contemporary romances are all about with better story telling rather than just conversations filled with raunchy humor.Only viewers who love these type of comedy would probably be entertained with it.
