Pleasantly Suprised!,

I came across this group by mistake, never knowing anything about this band from France. So I purchased the cd after hearing the sound bites on Amazon. These girls can Rock! I gave this cd a 5 star rating because this was better than I expected. "Barcelona" sounds like a sure hit, with it's catchy dance tempo. My other favorites are "I Could Rob You", "Bitch", the acoustic "I Am Down", "You're No Good" and "Coney Island". If they keep making music like this, they should be successful in the music world.

"About Love" by The Plastiscines is a great combination of French beauty and well-executed garage rock. This album contains an alluring combination of French and English lyrics, good musicianship, clever writing, and a variety of musical styles. Like you might suspect from the title, the songs thematically revolve around love and relationships. The songs tend toward up-tempo rockers, and include everything from a smoking cover of "You're No Good" (though I could have done without the "hey, ho, hey" embellishment,) to the tasteful acoustic "I Am Down Tonight." My favorites are definitely the fast-paced rockers "Another Kiss," "Pas Avec Toi," and "Barcelona," which is audio dynamite. The Plastiscines are native to Paris, and have been performing from a young age and are skilled musicians (one, bassist Louise Basilien, started off as a classically trained harpist!) I particularly loved the pairing of gravelly and brash instrumental parts with sweet and sultry lyrics, and think the finished album is a fine example of garage band ethos and girl band energy. This is an impressive album and while I'm not historically a fan of girl bands, I think this is a very good album.

This album is amazing! I thought YYY's 'Its Blitz' would be my favourite record this year, but then I heard The Plastiscines - and they know very well how to mix pop, rock, glam and fashion resulting in a glittering new-wave record! It's something really new to indie scene. I hope the next album has more songs in French, though.

"About Love" is the sophomore release from this french-rock band. It's focused more on love and relationships than the band's debut album "LP1". "About Love" is an americanized release from the french band. "LP1" was a lot more raw and rigid with a 70's rock sound. "About Love" is groovy, polished, and commercial, Don't be surprised if you hear some of these songs on an epidode of MTV's "The Hills" because that's exactly what it sounds like (Not a bad thing). Katty Besnard (Front Woman) sings in a softer tone than on the last album, putting forth more of a glossy popular appeal. If you've already heard "Barcelona" it's basically a sample of what the rest of the album sounds like. The band has revised and I don't think it was a bad idea at all. "About Love" is not the best but still acceptable and listenable. "I Could Rob You" and "B!tch" are two favorites of mine along with the old 60's/70's pop hit that's been covered numerous times by several different artists "You're No Good". "About Love" is a much better album "as a whole" than their debut. get it and find out for yourself.

OK they have improved a lot since their debut... A LOT. I was very negative about their first album but this is really better. However they started very very low. Despite everything that the french press has said, that was a wretched album. There has been an incredible level of media hysteria surrounding this girl group. They are the fantasy of most rock critics and as such get a lot of attention. They have considerable improved their image. Where on the previous album the typical Frenchie chic was the image, here they have taken up the glammy aspect of the early Pandoras, which is a very stunning look. Also the production is very clean and the playing is tighter. They even have an almost hit with Barcelona the first single which has a stunning video. However the singer can not really carry a tune and there is a lack of melody overall which kills it again. There is still some progress to be made. However if one sees some of their live videos on YouTube, live they are quite enthusiastic, even if somewhat amateurisch so there is probably room for improvement. They have made the right choice to move out of France at least for production purposes so they are on the right track... It is a progression, sound and look-wise but still not a great album. TGhey could make it on the next one. |
