4.0 out of 5 stars My 2 y.o. son likes this book a lot.
My son really enjoys all of the books in this series. I like that the illustrations are realistic and that species names are included. And as he gets older he really enjoys the additional information that's included in the back of the book!

There is not much to this book. Each double page spread has (up to) one sentence. This is all that is in it:

Mammals have hair.
They may have thick fur,
sharp quills,
or only a few stiff whiskers.
Baby mammals drink milk from their mothers.
Some mammals are born helpless.
Others can move about on their own soon after they are...

This whole series is great, especially if you live in U.S. Features common mammals they are likely to see (muskrat, squirrel, raccoon, etc.). Great pictures, little text -- perfect for very young children.

There is not much to this book. Each double page spread has (up to) one sentence. This is all that is in it:

Mammals have hair.
They may have thick fur,
sharp quills,

Baby mammals drink milk from their mothers.
Some mammals are born helpless.
Others can move about on their own soon after they are born.
Mammals may run,
climb,
swim,
or fly.
Mammals eat meat,
plants,
or both.
They may live in cold, icy places...
hot, dry deserts...
or wet marshes.
It is important to protect mammals where they live.

There is an afterward at the back of the book that expands on the picture that goes with each sentence but it is too awkward to go back and forth while reading.

This book got me all started and I am now a big Cathryn and John Sill fan. I borrowed this one from the library but I saw how my preshoolers got so interested and captivated by the pictures that I looked it up at Amazons. I am trying to complete the series. It is worth every dollar.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book from a delightful series, January 12, 2010

This is the third book from this series that we purchased for our toddler son, and we all love them. The illustrations are superb, and the text is simple enough for toddlers without being dull. This series is a wonderful way to teach children about nature and the world around them. Very excited to have found an author and illustrator who take such loving care with words, pictures, and ideas.
