Book Description

4 and upP and upAbout... (Peachtree Hardcover)
AUTHOR AND FORMER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TEACHER Cathryn Sill and her husband, noted wildlife illustrator John Sill, offer young readers a first glimpse into the natural world of mollusks in their latest book in the acclaimed About... series. In simple, easy-to-understand language children learn what mollusks are, how they look, how they move, what they eat, and where they live. The beautifully detailed, full-color illustrations reflect the vast diversity of the mollusk population--from a sixteen-foot-long Giant Pacific Octopus to an eight-inch-long BananaSlug--and present each in its natural habitat. The afterword, which provides details on the mollusks featured, will inspire young readers to learn more.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2–This attractive title consists mainly of large, realistic watercolors, each accompanied by a sentence or two of simply written text. It concludes with a sort of field guide with extra data on the featured creatures. (A single carp–the Hopkins' Rose is not identified as a sea slug until the afterword.) Less detailed than Beth Blaxland's busy Mollusks: Snails, Clams, and Their Relatives (Chelsea House, 2003), and simpler than Joy Richardson's Mollusks (Watts, 1993), this handsome look at a cast of lowly characters is a rewarding slice of the biodiversity pie.–Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-researched, May 14, 2008

(REAL NAME)
I bought this book for my (almost) second-grade daughter. I received the book yesterday and she read it last night, and she really enjoyed it. The color plates are very well done, probably inspired from photographs. The text next to each plate is very short and easy, so my daughter liked it and thought it was easy. Then we got the the foreword part, where a lot more information is provided. The text there is in smaller font and single-spaced, and thus was a little intimidating, and she did not want to read it. Then I suggested playing a game, and she read the text for one plate and I read the next, and so on (we swaped on the last two, because the last one is much longer than others).
I am a malacologist (i.e., I study mollusks), and I applaud the authors for the great job they did not only with the beautiful plates but also on the research. The text in the foreword is well written, and although a few words were unfamiliar to my kid, they are a great introduction to the mollusks. I would strongly recommend this little book to your little ones as a nice introduction not only to mollusks but on marine biology. I will now have to buy other books in this series! The only suggestion I would make is to have a little more text near the plates, and make the font size a little larger in the foreword, so as not to discourage kids from reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a wonderful way to learn, February 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the 3rd book in this series that we have purchased for out toddler, and each one is just as good as the last. The illustrations are are phenomenal, the text simple but very informative, and everything comes together beautifully. I am certain that this book and series would be age appropriate for children as old as 8, but certainly are very good for curious toddlers as well. So happy to have found this series!
