5.0 out of 5 stars YUM. July 19, 2010
I screwed up. I dumped one packet (like the one above) into 16 ounces of water, and realized after, that the suggestion was to use 8 ounces of water.

Instead of re-doing it, I just added another packet. The calories in this About Time protein are so low, that it's only 200ish calories for two servings, and 50!! grams of protein.

What I have now, in front of me, is a Strawberry + Birthday Cake Protein Shake (two separate flavors) made with 16 ounces of water and nothing else. I typically go with just. water. when I am trying to review a protein powder, because I like to doctor my shakes up after I get the gist of what they are Meant To Be on their own.

The smell of each flavor, before adding to water was merely sweet, no real pungent protein smell at all. Dumped into my cup, it's a very fine powder with no clumps. Mixed with too much water, it was very thin, and not at all sweet. Mixed CORRECTLY, it's slightly creamy, but not at all thick. There was no foaming even when I shook the crap out of the cup.

Mixed, it's a slightly thinner than a typical artificially sweetened protein powder, but still thick enough that it's not like a clear protein powder base. Since I mixed two flavors, I can't really tell you if the Strawberry is great by itself, however, I CAN taste the vanilla from the "Birthday Cake" flavor, so the two mixed is YUMMY. My only complaint is a slight dry lip feel afterwards, like most other whey proteins, but it's not really feeling that way IN my mouth.

One serving would have given me 102 calories, ZERO CARBS and 25 grams of protein. Since I'm having two because of my mistake, I'm have 204 calories, ZERO CARBS and 50! grams of protein. That, my friends, kicks protein ass.

This product is sweetened with Stevia, a natural plant based sweetener, and I can't tell. Had you said it was sweetened with anything else, I wouldn't know.

If you're looking for super low carbohydrate protein product that is naturally sweetened, "About Time" Protein is one to try. After weight loss surgery, it's pretty imperative that we keep the carb level low and the protein level high, and two servings of this product would hit close to the minimum protein requirement for most early post ops. I find that it's easy to sip, and not leaving any aftertaste, so as a new post-op, this would have gone down smoothly I bet.

Okay, the jury's in. Having been an avid Jay Robb user for years (also having tried many proteins on the market), I began to price shop, not hopeful I'd find the same quality elsewhere. Bingo, I did - About Time Protein. I am an individual consumer interested in weight loss and retaining muscle while my son is a fitness model and trainer getting a degree in sports management from a state university. Here's the rundown:

Both Jay Robb and About Time Whey Proteins are:
-Cross flow micro filtered
-Whey isolate only
-Seek hormone free sources
-No casein or MSG
-Pasteurized at the lowest temperature possible

Now for the differences:
-Carbs: Jay Robb's has 1 carb gram per serving, About Time's has none. That's huge when your shooting for under 10 carbs/day, like me.
-Choice: There are more flavors to choose from with About Time's, something I found very helpful when using protein shakes long term (JRobb: choc, van, strawberry, pina colada, dreamsicle) (ATime: choc, vanilla, strawberry, THEN, drum roll... birthday cake, cinnamon swirl, banana, peanut butter, choc peanut butter, mocha mint). That's 5 verses 9 respectively, About Time wins! Both have an unflavored version too.
-Taste: I thought Jay Robb's taste was smooth and palatable until... I tasted About Time's. I was a little leery of the flavor choices (birthday cake?) so... I ordered them all. That was easy since they have smaller sample packs and shake & go one serving bottles. The plan was to pick out my favorites so I set up a tasting experiment with paper and pen to note differences and prioritize. Big mistake. They're ALL good (and I'm normally a chocolate-only person) so I plan to order them all.
-Price: Now here's the clincher (for me). About Time's whey protein is priced more reasonably. I thought all along that Jay Robb's was overpriced so I was relieved to see he had some competition.
-Customer service: Given this is based on one call to each company, About Time's people are way more helpful with a higher level of professional courtesy than how I was treated by the customer service person at Jay Robb's. I couldn't get simple questions answered, like, "Is there a case discount?" "How much do I have to buy to get free shipping" etc. I'll chose a company that's more pleasant to deal with any time of day.
-Miscellaneous: About Time's mixes easy and leaves no aftertaste. It's been super easy to take on the go.
-Weight: My weight loss was stalled on Jay Robb's but as soon as I switched to the About Time, I lost a pound the first day (hope to update later). That's impressive when you consider I'd been both low carb (10-20 carbs/day) for months, and low calorie (average 1300) yet stuck on a plateau for a month even though I had lots left to loose. Something about About Time's protein kicked started the weight loss again.

Hope this was helpful! (single mother of five who's fitness routine has included swimming a mile a day, completing P90X, jogging, etc.)

I use a Magic Bullet. Turns out perfect every time. It's not too sweet and I usually make my shakes with fruit.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I was so looking forward to the birthday cake flavor protein. Alas, it was quite bland. I have to add flavor with my SF Torani syrups to make it good. Oh, well.
