Waste of "Time",
By Andrew Jacob (Brooklyn, New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: It's About Time (Audio CD)
A few years have passed since the debut of Christina Milian. Short-lived singles like "From AM to PM" and "Get Away" were at first well received, but eventually quieted down. Throughout the last two years, she has kept things relatively on the low, only just reappearing in 2003's "Love Don't Cost A Thing". It wasn't an Oscar-winning performance or movie, mind you, but it did remind everybody that Christina Milian was indeed still around. Unfortunately, although she is still around, she still has nothing to offer. I must admit she had me fooled with her lead single "Dip It Low". I initially wasn't a big fan of the song, but the alluring hook eventually got to me. And when comparing this single with her earlier ones, it is evident that she has matured. But not enough. Maybe I'm being a little too critical, but songs like "Highway", "I'm Sorry", & "Miss You Like Crazy" start off all right, but then fall flat. The quality of songs is sub par, ranging from the annoying "L.O.V.E.", the repetitive "Whatever You Want", and the semi-pitchy Janet Jackson-esque "I Need More". Some of the production is questionable too; including the surprisingly dull "Diwali Riddim"-esque-"Dark Child"-produced "Get Loose" and confusingly cluttered "Peanut Butter & Jelly". However, below all the fillers, there is one song that shines: the "SWV"-esque slow-jam "Someday One Day". But even with that said, it still cannot redeem anything more than what this album is: a waste of time. Perhaps the only thing "it's about time" for is the learning to distinguish good quality and omitting the bad.

Not Quite Time...,

If Christina Milian doesn't find longevity in the music industry then she can blame this album. That's not to say that 'It's About Time' is awful. It's just... well... there isn't anything new and innovative to set Christina apart from all the other 'divas.' Dip it Low is of course the pinnacle of the album. Milian's shimmering, lush vocals and semi-explicit lyrics add maturity to her otherwise childish album. It may sound as though I am dissing Milian's newest studio effort, but in actuality, I wish she would have found a musical niche and stuck with it. Every song on the album is good at first listen, but if fans are expecting to wear this cd out in their car decks, think again. American fans have waited for more than 3 years to get their hands on a Christina Milian album, and unfortunately, after hearing preview tracks from her self-titled debut, I would have to say her first time out was the real charm. Milian of course has to have guest appearances. Fabolous fits PERFECTLY inside the intoxicating rhythms of 'Dip it Low', but Joe Budden, who consistently appears on two tracks, fails to make his mark with his drunken drawls. His breakdown in the song L.O.V.E. is great when meshed with the 80's beats and Christina's honeyed vocals. Elsewhere is typical R&B/pop fare. 'Highway' is the ultra-explicit slow jam that Milian can, and most likely will, use to seperate herself from her Disney days. The song is okay at first listen, but is easily skipable thereafter. In fact, besides Dip it Low, L.O.V.E, and the stomp/clap rhythms of Get Loose, Milian provides no consistency and absolutely no innovative, unexplored frontier. It is both unfair to American fans who have waited diligently for Milian's return, and unfair to Milian herself, who is deserving if not trying to be a baby 'J.Lo'
