About the Author

Shari Johnson's book was written as a result of her struggle as an evangelical Christian to come to terms with her daughter's homosexuality. Through this sometimes gut-wrenching, humorous, but always honest account of her journey, her desire is to help reconcile families torn apart over this issue. From her example, she hopes that readers will have more sense than I did. Shari learned that grudging acceptance was not the same as embracing her daughter Cholene for who she is.

She went from devastation to full-on joy when she finally grasped that the most important thing to God is love. It truly is above all things.

I couldn't put the book down for a couple of reasons. Besides being well-written, it chronicles a journey of personal growth, transformative learning, and unexpected healing. Johnson puts us in the center of her "disorienting dilemma." She is a conservative Christian and she discovers that her high-achieving daughter is gay. James Mezirow famed theorist on adult learning suggests that adults learn when they are faced with a situation for which they have no answers. Johnson starts the journey with all of the answers but they are stripped away as she garners the courage to allow her assumptions to be challenged. I appreciate the humility of her voice and the space she leaves for people who have not yet experienced a "disorienting dilemma." I believe this book will prove to be a powerful agent for healing some of the most important relationships in life.

Sometimes, a book comes along that will define a change in the world: A Tale of Two Cities, Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, The Lorax. Above All Things is THAT book of our time. This is a Devine Change in the works. Mrs. Johnson shows, over and over, how judging others not only damages one's self but pushes loved ones farther away. I thank her and I praise her for "putting it all out there". She could have quietly had this change and gone on with life but, no, this is a message for the masses. I'm going to go ahead and say it...SHE'S GOT BALLS AS BIG AS CHURCHBELLS! And I thank her for it. You AND someone you know will get something out of this book...it's for EVERYONE!

I had a hard time putting this book down. While reading it, I went on my own journey of sorts. Although this book depicts the hardships of a mother discovering that her daughter is gay and how she came to terms with it and with her own life, it reaches out to all of us in a loving, often humorous fashion that life isn't all black and white! How we accept it can conquer or divide and if we just choose God's way of loving unconditionally, everything else emotionally falls into place. The book is well versed and will help you reach within to your own heart and soul. Definitely, a must read to put on your priority list.

Having some dysiexia type issues, I pick and choose my reading challenges with a good deal more scrutiny than the average reader. Being a life long Christian, as well as the offspring of two generations of Evangelical pastors put the content of Shari Johnson's book, "Above All Things", at heightened interest on my list of reading challenges. Thank goodness she did not waste my time and effort! The level of gut wrenching honesty Shari shares with us as a Christian mother coming to terms with her religious beliefs on homosexuality with her daughters revelation that she is gay, is a courageous offering. I feel this book sparked an inner revival of my own Christian attitude towards ALL my fellowman, and left me inspired to not only be a more loving spirited Christian, but a braver one as well. I highly recommend this book.

Shari Johnson's transforming journey to fully embrace her daughter's sexual orientation was both an inspiration and encouragement for me. It is a beautiful story, beautifully written. She is so real, open and truthful about her feelings and thoughts. I just could not put the book down. It was as if she was speaking right to me personally, like we were having a conversation about our children and comparing our similar stories and noticing the differences in our journeys. I would strongly recommend all parents of faith to read Above All Things. Actually I recommend this book to EVERYONE, we all have people in our lives who may need our love and encouragement, and a clearer understanding of what it truly means to "love the LORD with all your heart and all your soul and all your mind....and to love your neighbor as yourself."

Loved it. The most thought provoking book I have read in a long time and a great example of reaching a point of unconditional love. What if the only thing Jesus wants us to do is love Him and each other? What if it ISN'T our job to make sure the person in our church who is gay doesn't sing in the choir or, God forbid, actually "join our church"? What if we love the parents of gay children as if Jesus just stopped us in the foyer and told us to? Oh, but He did, didn't He?

This book by Johnson finding her way to the unconditional love for her Lesbian daughter is inspirational and heart warming. Johnson courageously exposes her soul by expressing the deepest and most agonizing details of her process through anger, fear, confusion to finally arrive at acceptance that opened her heart. Not only is this timely book very authentic as she exposes her life long belief systems and her devotion to her Christian faith, but there is a great deal of humor that makes this a must read for families of all faiths. Not only will it be a very helpful read to families struggling through Gay and Lesbian issues, it can also be helpful to liberal minded families who may be open to hear the range of issues that prevent good intentioned people from reaching acceptance.
