I like the idea of having a chin-up bar within the door frame; however, I am tall, and the typical product of this nature doesn't give me enough vertical room. 1.0 out of 5 stars Bolt broke, not safe
While hand tightening the bolts one broke right off. I am concerned about the safety of this product. I contacted them about a refund but they wanted me to ship the bar back at my cost which would end up costing me more than the refund. Be very careful with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed., September 6, 2009
This review is from: Above the Door Chin up Bar (Misc.)
I like the idea of having a chin-up bar within the door frame; however, I am tall, and the typical product of this nature doesn't give me enough vertical room. This product allowed me to be more flexible in customizing it's height. Keep in mind, not all doors have studs that run horizontal above the frame; however, all door frames have what are called King Studs, which run vertically on both sides of the door frame. You can google this to see what I am talking about. I also took the liberty of installing a thick base board between the wall and the bar to both increase the stability and allow me to raise the bar a little higher. I do recommend going to the hardware store and replacing the lag bolts that come with the bar, get galvanized lag bolts and washers. Now here is the trick that I used to maintain a solid and tight fit on the wall.. Drill a pilot hole for all your screws then screw the lag bolts through the base board and into the studs. Unscrew everything and buy some oak wood dowels, hammer them in the holes that are left from the lag bolts, then screw the bolts back in. This will ensure a very tight fit and an incredible hold. I hope this review helps with any questions that you may have about this product, as I have tried to base it on all questions that I had when I was thinking about purchasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, May 5, 2008

This chin-up bar is a very sturdy built bar. The bolts they provide definetly do their job so i suggest using them. Your wall will break before this bar will the way they recommend that you set it up. The only "problem" i have is with the grips which is a standard type grip you'd find on any weightlifting bar. I solved this by just wrapping a towel around the bar whenever i use it or wear gloves but some may like it. I'm a mechanic and my hands get pretty messed up everyday so that's the reason why for me personally it hurts. I weigh around 225 lbs and this bar handles my weight with no problem just as long as you follow the instructions you'll be fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bar, super strong, and super strong mounting, March 9, 2008
This bar is excellent. Nicely finshed and very fair price. Delivery was very fast. Some people may not like the lack of a padded bar, but I prefer the knurled grip. Padding eventually seems to always tear off....etc. You can add padding to this bar if you wish. This bar's strongest point ( no pun intended) is it is heavily made and the mountng is into the framing header (solid wood) that should be in the wall immediately above any door in the house. I'm 200 plus lbs. and with the supplied lag screws driven into the wall and header there is no movement in this bar even if I bounce a bit. It also does not screw into to or brace against your expensive decorative door casings or jambs a big plus for me. As for the use of the bar. It's up to you, do negatives if you can't do the proper pull up or chin ups in good form to begin with. There are no better exercises for development of,"true strength", of the back, shoulders and biceps as well as development of strength of other so called collateral muscles involved in these exercises. These exercises in general will develop ,"useful strength".

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Simple Chin Up Bar - Beware the lag screws, July 14, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Above the Door Chin up Bar (Misc.)
This is a great chin up bar... it's simple to install... looks nice and doesn't take up much room as the mounting plate is nice and small. It's very sturdy and does what I need it to do.

The vendor is great as well... I ordered two by mistake (don't ask) and they took back the extra one no questions asked. The credit appeared on my account just a few days after I shipped it.

Be careful of the provided lag screws. The head snapped off of one of mine before I realized two things: (a) the lag screws are soft... do yourself a favor and go buy replacements made out of galvanized steel and (b) the pilot holes in the instructions are wrong for the diameter lag provided... they are too small.

Very solid product. Make sure you have adequate wood to bolt the bar into. a good choice if you are wanting to save on space and are avoiding buying a powerstation or floor model. Overall very pleased with the purchase. Product was received quickly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heavy duty, full metal, for big hands, beats Iron Gym., November 9, 2009

Pros: Gym quality solid metal, excellent size, gun metal color.
I am a tall guy 6' 1', 190 lb. So far I have used Iron Gym for my P90X. Unfortunately, it starts destroying molding around the door, plus I have to bent my knees all the time. This product is a lot more solid and permanent.

Price is great for the product.

Cons: You need to have at least 2 inches thick wooden beam to mount this product. My apartment complex has lousy 1 inch beams that cracked after I have attached the bar and tested it. So I had to buy a 2x6 stud and attach it to the vertical door studs. I wish they mention this option in the manual. It actually allows you to attach the bar higher up.

The bar is pretty thick and requires gloves or padding if you want to use it frequently. I have big hands so it is great for me.

Installation manual is poorly written. They do not provide enough installation options or pictures of doorway and studs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Built, January 11, 2011

This pull up bar is well made and definately a great price. Being a Marine I have seen my fair share of pull up bars, including the door hanging type which drives me nuts when I have to remove it to close the door or hit my head on it. I didnthave a door with a true header and good location to put this up but no worries former experience in the construction industry prevails, I attached this pullup bar to a 2x6 with the provided lag bolts and then lag bolted it to the wall studs in my garage. Also I am happy to support a good american company near where I grew up in Upstate NY.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple. Sturdy. Effective., November 11, 2010
This review is from: Above the Door Chin up Bar (Misc.)
Not much to be said about this. It's dead simple, it mounts easily, it's sturdy, and it works. The handles extend out fairly wide, so be sure there's about six inches of clear space on either side of the doorway you mount it on.

Pros -- if you use the huge lag bolts to bolt it onto a header above a doorway, it's not coming down. It's high off the ground so you don't have to tuck your knees in to do a chinup. It does what it's supposed to do -- let you do chinups and pullups with various positions. The price is quite reasonable for what you get.

Cons -- no directions for installation. Can be difficult to find an appropriate doorway to mount it over -- in my house, there was only one doorway in the entire house that had a header over it *plus* had sufficient space to the left and right of the door for the "ears", all the other doorways either had no header over it or were in a hallway with one side or the other being a corner. And of course you have to put those *huge* screws into a header, which leaves big holes behind if this is a rental house, so be aware that you'll need to be creative with the spackling paste and paint to fill in the holes and disguise them when you leave.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two thumbs and one chin up:), February 1, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Above the Door Chin up Bar (Misc.)
Great product. I tried to hang it in the rafters of the basement rather than above the door, which isn't exactly what it was made for. The screws that hold it in place are too long for the rafters. When I use the bar, it feels slightly loose. I plan to use a 2x4 on the other side to screw it in more securely, but I haven't done that yet.
