Book Description

February 23, 2006 P and up
Ants march on a picnic and turn it upside down,
returning with treats for friends underground.

Up above, the ants are taking over a picnic. But down below is another story. Look closely and you'll find very different worlds living side by side, at a picnic, in the ocean, in the blazing desert, even inside the same two-story home. Sue Redding's bold, wonderfully detailed illustrations hide lots of fun and mischiefkeep an eye out for the red ant and green worm who have snuck into every picture!

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K–Each spread illustrates activities above and below ground in specific locales: a house and its cellar, a stage, a picnic spot, the Antarctic, a jungle, a city street, a desert, a vegetable garden, two boats, a golf course, and a suburban street. The colorful, computer-generated pictures are elaborate and interesting. Most of the below-ground scenes are fairly plausible, but others include animals playing cards, reading, etc. The one beneath the golf course humorously shows gophers using machinelike contraptions to recycle golf balls. The scenes are separated by rhyming couplets. Unfamiliar words such as performing, crew, unaware, and conceals offer good teaching moments. Children will want to pore over the details and think about the many activities depicted in the art. Pair this title with Arlene Mosel's The Funny Little Woman (Puffin, 1993) for another amusing depiction of what goes on above and below ground.–Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ

From Booklist

PreS. In this debut picture book, whimsical, computer-generated pictures juxtapose active worlds, above and below ground. The simple, rhyming text introduces the scenarios: "While actors on stage are performing a play, the crew down below is working away." The full-page spreads, split horizontally in two, show different scenes: rooms filled with family activity above a quiet basement; hikers in a hot desert above spelunkers in a cool cave. Some of the most fanciful scenes include animals: golfers fret on the course above an underground factory where gophers collect and polish balls. A few spreads focus on water, and the contrasts in mood are stark: while sailors toss on a stormy sea above, "under the waves, it's as calm as can be." Children will return again and again to find new objects in the bright, clean-lined artwork, and an ant and worm tucked into each spread offer an added seek-and-find game. Guaranteed fun for interactive, one-on-one read-alouds. Gillian Engberg

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for "big" and little ones!, June 24, 2006

With gorgeous, clever pictures and spare text, you can't just "read" this book to your child... you'll have discussions about the small (ants and worms figure big here) and the large (the Antarctic, the rain forest, whales.) Each turn of the page presents a cheerful, but ever-so-gently-subversive, panorama of animals and people sharing the same space. Like all great children's entertainment, there's plenty to amuse adults as well as kids.

This book was a gift to my three-year old, who loudly informs us that this is "HIS favorite." I've never written an Amazon review, but was inspired to check this book's listing -- and to add my son's recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Charming and clever, March 19, 2007

I bought this book for my 3 year old son because I was drawn to the quirky artwork.

It has proven to be a family favorite. The best part is the pictures are so detailed that we are always discovering something new and funny. The text is a bit lacking but in this case a picture is worth a thousand words.

If you like cool books with great art then this is highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for preschoolers, March 1, 2007
By
This review is from: Up Above and Down Below (Hardcover)
Our four-year-old son loves this book. The saturated colors, detailed illustrations, and the simple concept offers much in the way of discussion about the world and everyday life with preschoolers. When I asked my son what he liked about it, he said, "I just love it, that's all." Enough said.
