Great for "big" and little ones!,
By nanotang (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Up Above and Down Below (Hardcover)
With gorgeous, clever pictures and spare text, you can't just "read" this book to your child... you'll have discussions about the small (ants and worms figure big here) and the large (the Antarctic, the rain forest, whales.) Each turn of the page presents a cheerful, but ever-so-gently-subversive, panorama of animals and people sharing the same space. Like all great children's entertainment, there's plenty to amuse adults as well as kids. This book was a gift to my three-year old, who loudly informs us that this is "HIS favorite." I've never written an Amazon review, but was inspired to check this book's listing -- and to add my son's recommendation.

Charming and clever,

I bought this book for my 3 year old son because I was drawn to the quirky artwork. It has proven to be a family favorite. The best part is the pictures are so detailed that we are always discovering something new and funny. The text is a bit lacking but in this case a picture is worth a thousand words. If you like cool books with great art then this is highly recommended!

Great for preschoolers,

Our four-year-old son loves this book. The saturated colors, detailed illustrations, and the simple concept offers much in the way of discussion about the world and everyday life with preschoolers. When I asked my son what he liked about it, he said, "I just love it, that's all." Enough said.

Up Above and Down Below was one of my son's favorite books when he was 3. Now he's five and it's still a favorite! The text is simple and rhyming but it's the pictures that make for real fun! Highly recommended.

I bought this book for my 18 month old nephew, after witnessing a friend's toddler's love of the book. Every page is chock-full of pictures for kids to explore, and find something new each time they flip through the pages.

This book is fun! My two kids (ages 4 and 2)ask for it constantly. We finally had to buy it because they whined when I tried to return the library's copy (which we'd checked out numerous times). The pictures are bright and each spread is packed with activity. Good for inquisitive minds. The kids always spot something they hadn't discovered before. They still like to find their favorite things in the illustrations too. I enjoy the clever ups and downs the author introduces. We'll probably be enjoying this book through early elementary.

My 5yo son begged us to buy this book after we had to return it to the library AGAIN. It has very engaging detailed pictures with very little real text to read so it is great even for our 2yo to follow. Fun to try to find the worm and ant on every page spread too. Appeals to boys and girls! We regularly read this book eventhough we all know it by heart.

We got this book when our kids were two years old (that was two years ago) and they loved it. In fact, they still do!Sue teaches industrial design, and it shows in her work. There's always something interesting to see, not just people or animals, but also buildings and machinery. I hope she does more books! We will gladly add them to our children's library.

My 18 month old loves this book. We have had it for about two months and we still are finding something new to look at on each page which is really fun for both of us. It is a great way to expand her vocabulary.

A must have for your pre-schooler,

I recently purchased this book for my 3 year old grandson. I had read the reviews and expected to 'like' the book, but I LOVE this book. The illustrations are whimsical, funny, thought-provoking and make "reading time" an adventure. The simple concept (above and below) and sparse words, add to the richness of the book; allowing you and your child to experience each page as you discover new scenes and characters. We go to the library on Friday afternoons with our grandson, and we have read more children's books than I can remember; but this book is one not to be forgotten. If you only get one children's book this year - make it this one. |
