This DVD/CD is from the former lead singer and keyboardist for the Guess Who (which included co-founder Randy Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive fame). Included is his first solo album of all-new material in 18 years recorded with the members of his tour

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock 'n Roll Gold July 6, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Fans have been eagerly awaiting for the release of Above The Ground - the latest solo album by Burton Cummings - one of the top vocalists in rock `n roll. It's been a few years since Burton's last solo studio album - 18 years to be exact since Plus Signs came out in 1990. The good news is I don't think anyone will be disappointed with this album - in fact, in my view Above The Ground ranks right up there among his best albums.

At 19 tracks (all originals) this is the equivalent of a double album - most of Burton's previous solo records contained 9-10 songs and usually at least had a cover song or two. In a recent interview Burton described it as his "White Album" - The Beatles' 1968 double album. One of the best things about the White Album is the incredible diversity of songs. In that respect, Above The Ground is very similar - with a wide variety of material.

The album (which was originally to be titled "Double Nickel") was recorded earlier this year at Joe Vannelli's (Gino's brother) Blue Moon Studio in Agoura Hills, California - north of LA. The Carpet Frogs - a talented band from Toronto - were used on the album and certainly contributed to making the overall sound of the record quite different than any of Burton's previous solo albums. The Carpet Frogs have been Burton's touring band for a number of years and were also featured on the Bachman-Cummings "Jukebox" album which was released in mid-2007.

The songs on Above The Ground were written over the years - some recently (such as the title track) and others some time ago. One song on the album - a humorous song called Rollaway (a rollaway / a rollaway / that bed just down the hall is a rollaway) was actually written in late 1970.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burton Cummings still has the Magic June 22, 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Certainly not the typical commercial album, but for true Cummings fans, this album delivers. A little humor, soul reflection, and even mystery (what the heck did happen to Richard?), this collection of songs proves that Burton Cummings has always had the voice. Even after 40+ years, you get the occasional sound of the voice beloved by Guess Who fans. Me? I'm a faithful fan, and am just thrilled to have his latest work. So Burton Cummings, wherever you are, thank you from Gig Harbor WA, where people are hearing your music as I drive around with the windows down!

If artists were still consistently making records like this one, we wouldn't hear all the criticism and complaints about the music industry that we hear today. This disc actually was released in Canada in late 2008 and it's better late than never that this fine album gets a US release. Burton has always been unique in that even his biggest fans are divided as to whether he is best at singing ballads or blasting a rocker. No problem- he does plenty of each on this collection of 19 original tunes (the first time in his 40+ year career he's ever put out an album of self-penned songs).

In a different time, there are no less than 5 smash top 10 hits on this album. Dream, A Touch of Morning, Any Minor Miracle, We Just Came From the U.S.A., and Pretty Pictures are legitimate bona fide hit singles. This group of songs matches up well with Burton's best work over the years, both solo and with The Guess Who. Not to short change the other tracks on this album. Ponderlust may be the best album track ever to appear on a Cummings solo disc-it's an incredible song. Kurt's Song is a tribute to deceased Guess Who guitarist Kurt Winter. Burton is sometimes underrated as a songwriter, but his fans will not be surprised that this song is incredibly moving without being being maudlin. Crazy If You Mess With The Gods, Invisible, TPOS, Retribution, Up In The Canyon and Look Out Charlie are all excellent songs. And the album closer and title track is a perfect ending to a perfect CD.

Burton's back up band The Carpet Frogs do a great job on this album and the bonus DVD included makes this an incredible value as well. I guarantee that you'll play this disc over and over-the songs are that infectious. So "be aware that there's not many there to take time to sing and play an honest song for the people". But there's at least one who always has and he doesn't disappoint with Above The Ground - let's hope we don't have to wait as long for Burton's next album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Burt's Back December 13, 2010
By Max
Format:Audio CD
I was a huge fan of the Guess Who from '69 - 75," so I was excited to find this. On a whole, this compares very well to Cumming's best work from that era. Time has lowered his voice, but that is just a non-negotiable part of aging. That said, these songs are written in keys friendly to his "mature" voice, and Cummings is still a great rock and roll singer. Boomers looking escape and nostalgia will likely be disappointed. Those who valued Cummings as a talented singer and songwriter will enjoy hearing what he has o say in 2010. Highlights for me were, "Any Minor Miracle," "Kurt's Song," and "Crazy if You Mess With the Gods." The ballads are great and the rockers are much more interesting than the material on the new Bachman Turner CD. Buy it.

Burton Cummings
My fav album used to be Roadfood, then SLB, now #10 and Share the Land's right up there too, Dream of a Child, Woman Love, it's just too hard to choose. That's like asking me to choose the best note on a Steinway, they're all perfect!

Everything on ATG is great, but I love "Kurt's Song". Burton Cummings is such an awesome song writer (a poet, really), and that voice--Oh, that voice!
