Book Description

Jenna Emerson learns she's clairvoyant when her mother's spirit contacts her with a plea for help. Something in the afterlife threatens the survival of spirits from Haldis Notch, Vermont.

From the house next door comes another plea, this time from the living. Responding to it leads Jenna to reunite with her childhood friend, and she learns how intensely his deceased father, Jake, resented the residents of Haldis Notch. Retaliation against physical lives wasn't enough. He carried his venom into death, determined to inflict vengeance on their souls. Jake always had a special passion for Jenna, and now she's the only one who can stop him. To succeed she must learn more about what drives him, but understanding Jake's motives draws her into his trap. If Jenna falls victim, every soul in Haldis Notch will suffer the ultimate retaliation for the petty grudges they held in life.

"If you love science fiction thrillers, and who doesn't, you are going to love Keith Pyeatt's "Above Haldis Notch." Set in a strange, rural Vermont village, author Pyeatt's characters come to life from the very first page to the last...Keith Pyeatt writes not only in Technicolor but in 3D." -- Janet K. Brennan, JB Stillwater reviews (

"I was drawn into this book right away, from the opening page I could not read fast enough. I wanted to find out the whys, to see where it was going, to learn how Jenna would handle things and figure out the mystery. From the Author

Above Haldis Notch is a paranormal thriller/suspense novel that fits right into my horror with heart brand. It's an afterlife novel, set in the rural Northeast Kingdom of Vermont, where I lived for a decade and where I began writing fiction. The novel embraces that area, just like I did.

The theme of vengeance runs through this novel. A Charlotte Bronte quote set my mind to the idea, and I left the quote on the opening page of my document, so it was always the first thing I saw when I began writing for the day: "Something of vengeance I had tasted for the first time; as aromatic wine it seemed, on swallowing, warm and racy: its after-flavor, metallic and corroding, gave me a sensation as if I had been poisoned."

The other big theme readers can't help but notice is the power of family. The main character, Jenna, is from the family that's the pillar of the small community of Haldis Notch. The Webbs are the scourge of the community, and I shoved these two families next door to each other for contrast, made Jenna and Kevin Webb estranged childhood best friends, and arranged it so the two families had to work together to save the day. Then I played with the differences in the main characters because of their families' influence on them. I like the dimension it adds to the novel, and I hope you will too.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Novel February 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Paranormal horror is one of my favourite genres, so I couldn't wait to dive into Above Haldis Notch. Pyeatt's writing style is smooth and easy to read, and he has a way of describing places and people so they quickly become familiar - like old friends.
The mystery element of this novel pulled me in from the start. It began with a suicide so strange and psychologically disturbing that I vowed to read the rest of the book during daylight hours. It was a wise move.
Jenna, the main character, is truly courageous in her efforts save herself, her family, and the residents of Haldis Notch from the boundless and menacing antagonist, Jake. She's a heroine you can route for, and right up to the final moments I wondered how on earth she would prevail.
I wholeheartedly recommend this novel to any lover of horror and the paranormal.

More About the Author

Keith Pyeatt spent a decade living in an isolated log cabin he built in northeastern Vermont, USA. He began that decade an engineer and came out of it a novelist. He won't say what happened in those rural woods that turned him, but suspicions are that it had something to do with things that go bump in the night.

Keith's novels might be labeled literary horror, psychological thrillers, paranormal suspense, magical realism, or dark fantasy, but Keith calls them Horror with Heart. His novels tend to be high concept, with huge consequences for mankind if the hero fails to save the day, but it's the characters Keith takes particular pleasure in developing. They come to feel like real, flawed beings to him, whether they're lovable, despicable, tortured, or those "in-between" characters you can't quite decide whether to love or hate.
