Book Description

“I found Above the Line to be the marriage of Good to Great by Jim Collins and The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Depak Chopra. It turns out that what’s good for the balance sheet is good for relationships and vice-a-versa.”
--Robert Wagnon, CEO, Republic State Mortgage

This is a book for anyone facing the number one challenge in business: Hiring and inspiring people to carry out your vision.

But be forewarned: This is not a feel-good business book. Above the Line is a true tale of a misfit CEO about the undeniable connection between people and profits.

An introspective portrayal of the emotional roller coaster that many leaders and entrepreneurs face – both personally and professionally – the book documents a CEO’s path of discovering himself through his business.

It’s about his quest to discover his core purpose and values while facing the pressures creating a sustainable business that puts people first. It’s a book about how to do the right thing when things go wrong.

With an easy-going, narrative style – author Steve Satterwhite takes readers through his entrepreneurial journey. He vulnerably shares the highs, lows, and demons of fear, self-doubt, and self-confidence along the way.

Above the Line is a quick and easy read that some say they “couldn’t put down”. Steve's passion for people and his willingness to authentically share makes it more than a typical business book.

It’s a call to action to leaders everywhere to create a culture of inspired people who hold themselves to high standards, strive to do the right thing, make this world a better place…and vastly increase company profits as a happy side effect of this new way of working.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Above the Line is a simple formula for leaders who want to inspire people to light up the world through the work they do.”
--Chip Conley, Founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality and Author of PEAK

“This is a must read for entrepreneurs because Steve tells the real story of the entrepreneurial journey, not the made for TV version. He established his company culture and kept adapting the business model until it fit his culture AND made a profit!”
--Greg Crabtree, CEO Crabtree, Rowe & Berger, PC, Author of Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits!

“Steve sees what we don’t, hears what we don’t and scrupulously documents, even when to do so is unflattering . . . a truth finder in an arena famously devoid.”
--Robert Wagnon, CEO – Republic State Mortgage

“When Steve Satterwhite says he believes in you, you better believe it. It’s who he is. It resonates throughout what he does. And here’s the kicker: You can’t help but be better around Steve. Above the Line proves it’s not so much a roadmap you need for bottom line success in business and in life, but an internal compass with a bearing towards “better” for ourselves and those we lead.”
--Warren Macdonald, Author of A Test of Will

“Steve’s conversational writing style and storytelling make this a must read for those striving to grow and develop in their business career at all management levels.”
--Lee Froschheiser, Executive Chairman, MAP Consulting, Author of Vital Factors

It shared what business leaders goes through while establishing a business, not only this and also the ups and downs that every business goes through, leaving you feeling you are not alone. Still there is no magic pill, I liked the idea chose your one unique preposition and concentrate on. Sometimes it was little boring but I finished it, thanks Steve for sharing your experience with us!

5.0 out of 5 stars A hard hitting that delivers a powerful message June 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of those books that every business person with a conscious should read. It is about doing the right thing when it isn't the most popular thing to do. It's about taking responsibility and realizing the true purpose of having a business. There is more to life than just the bottom line, and with the likes of Enron and WorldCom, to name a few, show that to be true. For me, the message that I take away from this book is keeping true to your character. Character is what you do when no one is watching and taking care of your people is paramount, and that includes the customers as well as the employees. A very beneficial book that I will read again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth your time October 28, 2013
Format:Perfect Paperback
As a business owner we are constantly hearing stories about when things go right- here's an opportunity to read about when things go wrong and how one leader handled the challenges he was presented. It was interesting to me to read about the personal struggles and the reactions to some of the decisions. This is not your typical "feel good" business book- definitely worth your time to read it.

This is an excellent book -- one of the best business books I've recently read. It's clear, concise, well-written, and incredibly useful.

The author honestly recounts his company's journey. His company zealously focused on customer service as its differentiator, and only gradually realized that its focus on hiring & growing great employees was equally important.

The author also credits a number of other books and authors as sources for the ideas that helped improve his business. This makes "Above the Line" a great introduction to a wider selection of business-management books.

In fact, the author was so persuasive, I just placed orders for five of the books he mentioned, plus a print copy of this book (to give to a colleague).

5.0 out of 5 stars Leading beyond what's in front you March 31, 2014

I enjoyed this book. I recognized several problem instances Steve illustrates that are happening or have happened to me in my company. Stepping back a bit to reassess is the reminder I needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Always do the right thing. December 14, 2013
Format:Perfect Paperback
Great book. Read it in about two hours. Couldn't put it down. Steve takes you through the starting of his business, how he dealt with a downturn, and what he found in business and about how to deal with people/employees/customers that allowed him to soar to success. Doing the right thing on all levels is something that should always be top of mind.

I truly enjoyed this first person perspective of the journey from startup to sustainable (and scaleable) success. Steve puts things in a light that is easily understood but also eludes to many layers that I look forward to exploring...Great job
