Review

“Above the Line is a simple formula for leaders who want to inspire people to light up the world through the work they do.”
--Chip Conley, Founder of Joie de Vivre Hospitality and Author of PEAK

“This is a must read for entrepreneurs because Steve tells the real story of the entrepreneurial journey, not the made for TV version. He established his company culture and kept adapting the business model until it fit his culture AND made a profit!”
--Greg Crabtree, CEO Crabtree, Rowe & Berger, PC, Author of Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits!

“Steve sees what we don’t, hears what we don’t and scrupulously documents, even when to do so is unflattering . . . a truth finder in an arena famously devoid.”
--Robert Wagnon, CEO – Republic State Mortgage

“When Steve Satterwhite says he believes in you, you better believe it. It’s who he is. It resonates throughout what he does. And here’s the kicker: You can’t help but be better around Steve. Above the Line proves it’s not so much a roadmap you need for bottom line success in business and in life, but an internal compass with a bearing towards “better” for ourselves and those we lead.”
--Warren Macdonald, Author of A Test of Will

“Steve’s conversational writing style and storytelling make this a must read for those striving to grow and develop in their business career at all management levels.”
--Lee Froschheiser, Executive Chairman, MAP Consulting, Author of Vital Factors

This is one of those books that every business person with a conscious should read. It is about doing the right thing when it isn't the most popular thing to do. It's about taking responsibility and realizing the true purpose of having a business. There is more to life than just the bottom line, and with the likes of Enron and WorldCom, to name a few, show that to be true. For me, the message that I take away from this book is keeping true to your character. Character is what you do when no one is watching and taking care of your people is paramount, and that includes the customers as well as the employees. A very beneficial book that I will read again.

As a business owner we are constantly hearing stories about when things go right- here's an opportunity to read about when things go wrong and how one leader handled the challenges he was presented. It was interesting to me to read about the personal struggles and the reactions to some of the decisions. This is not your typical "feel good" business book- definitely worth your time to read it.

It shared what business leaders goes through while establishing a business, not only this and also the ups and downs that every business goes through, leaving you feeling you are not alone. Still there is no magic pill, I liked the idea chose your one unique preposition and concentrate on. Sometimes it was little boring but I finished it, thanks Steve for sharing your experience with us!

My time with Steve and the rest of the all star cast of characters at Entelligence empowered me, encouraged me, and gave me the foundation I needed to go make a difference in the business world. Implementing the life lessons and point of view that Steve brings as a leader won't be for everyone. It isn't a process, a set of steps, or six sigma for a winning business culture. It's about authenticity, audacity and never giving up on yourself. It's about investing both time and money into creating a business that runs on the collective energy of people that want to be extraordinary. Guess what customers think about an organization that runs like that?

In my experience it's a very rare thing indeed to have a leader that gives you permission to believe you can be extraordinary. My five year old wakes up like that every day. He dresses in super hero outfits for our Saturday breakfast. We were five once. When did the world talk us out of believing we can be the very best at our work, even if we aren't astronauts or a member of the Avengers. I will treasure the gift Steve and the Entelligence environment gave me.

Give the book a read, find an idea that resonates and go put it to work. If you're business owner, go make a difference in the life of someone that works for you. If you're not a business owner, go make a different in the life of someone that works with you. And if you're in a toxic work environment that's void of passion, positive energy and a "we can do anything attitude" do yourself a favor. Update your resume and find someone like Steve & John to work for.

I read Steve's book when at a crossing in my entrepreneur life. We all know and face the highs and lows of the rollercoaster life of entrepreneurship but sometimes some lows are real tough and make us doubt about ourselves. Reading this book at a time when I was experiencing such self-doubts put me back on track.

Usually, entrepreneurial books are based on a theory illustrated by some practical examples. This is not the case for "Above the line", in fact this book is built around a true entrepreneur journey - Steve's - and backed by the principles, inspirations and theories Steve used at each significant moment of his entrepreneurial path.

Thanks to an entrepreneur who has the courage to open himself, this book is full of day-to-day successes, failures and real life emotions. "Above the line" is a must read for any confirmed or aspiring entrepreneur that want to succeed keeping in sight that he's an human too.

No entrepreneurs are perfect or conform to the image we have about them; we all have our weaknesses and make mistakes. Steve shows us that it is normal, that it is not an obstacle to success if we accept it and deal with it by delegating to people who complement us and by continuously learning. Reading this book is a good way to easily learn a lot of success principles and techniques that apply to any small business lead by a true entrepreneur.

Above The Line may challenge some hoary business precepts -- which is exactly the reason to read it. Steve Satterwhite makes the case for running your business the right way, rather than the way you're "supposed to." His concepts are, in some ways, forehead slappers: See people for who they are. Honor that. Help them succeed. Be straight with them. Be straight with yourself. When in doubt, do the right thing.

The results, he argues, will be a more successful, more profitable business. He's careful to note that success doesn't come overnight -- it takes a lot of work, because to truly do what he describes requires a culture change, and that change has to happen inside each individual before it can happen within the organization. Satterwhite's ideas, on their face, may seem pie-in-the-sky. But he's built a hugely successful company while evolving them. The way business gets done is changing, and Above the Line is at least a partial guidebook to that change and how to both be a part of it and capitalize on it.
