Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4?An introduction to the animals of the alpine tundra. After a brief description of the physical landscape, Cooper offers separate narratives about each creature. A brief factual section follows each one. The text does describe some interactions among the inhabitants of this ecosystem, but the presentation does little to draw connections for readers. Often the language is stilted and strangely anthropomorphic. Emerling's colored-pencil illustrations are accurate but static and lack the drama necessary to portray an interconnected habitat. "Animals Animals Animals" (Capstone Press) and, for older readers, "Creatures All Around Us" (Carolrhoda) are fine series that have exciting, full-color photographs. Bianca Lavies's Tundra Swans (Dutton, 1994) gives youngsters a highly readable and lively look at the life of the tundra.?Ellen M. Riordan, Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore, MD

Review

"This is a picture book that introduces children to the wildlife commonly found above the treeline in the southern Rocky Mountains. In these pages you meet big horn sheep, weasels, eagles, marmots, treeline birds, shrews, pikas, elk ptarmigans and badgers. You learn what they eat and what eats them. You learn where they live and how they live. In the end, the author describes how all of the animals are interrelated; 'a link in the whole pattern of nature.' There's a lot of information packed in this little book and the pictures will help hold a youngster's interest." -- Peter Lord. Small Press Sept/Oct 1996

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonders of the Alpine Tundra, February 24, 2010
This review is from: Above the Treeline (Wild Wonders) (Paperback)
This wonderful book explores the alpine tundra. Facts are weaved into the text to delight young readers. Teachers will enjoy reading Treeline aloud to their students for its engaging text and illustrations but also for its importance to the environment.
