This review is from: Above the dark tumult, an adventure, (Hardcover)
Although nothing happened til page 133 of this 303 page book, after that it was pretty good, if overwritten as the style of the times dictated (1931). Actually, this could make a good movie, with striking visuals, especially if a little magical realism were used. It takes place mostly in and around Picadilly Circus, London, in the course of one evening in winter, sometime in the 1920s. As in all novels of the time, it dwells on the plight of the post-war soldier, the wildness of the times, lapses of morals, etc. John Osbourne is a very memorable character, as were the two Pengellys.
