Nashville, Tenn.—Abra Moore is a visionary. From the very beginning, she forfeited boundaries and classification letting her music evolve organically. Her approach resulted in a Grammy Nomination and worldwide acclaim for her Arista Austin album Strangest Places. After going through the major label machine, Moore’s musical journey circled inward. Her new collection, On The Way, brought her back to the fertile creative ground that informed much of her earlier work and was in many ways a homecoming. On The Way is being released on June 12th on Sarathan Records, a progressive, innovative Seattle-based independent label.
Moore signing with Sarathan was a case of visionary meets visionary. Sarathan was founded by Jonathan Kochmer, one half of the acclaimed duo Two Loons For Tea, and one of the first 10 employees of online retail-giant Amazon.com. Kochmer’s passion and forward-thinking innovation helped turn the then fledgling start-up into one of the most successful companies of the Internet era. He’s putting that same creative spark into Sarathan which has already earned a reputation as an artist friendly company releasing highly original records.
Sarathan was the perfect home for the trans-genre, soulful and sultry group of songs that Moore wrote for On The Way. Moore has always created emotionally rich and atmospheric songs. That’s why her music has been used in more than 25 films and television shows including Happy Texas, Cruel Intentions, Sliding Doors, Party of Five, Melrose Place, and Dawson’s Creek.
The album comes after a tumultuous period in Moore’s life. One that saw her record a record for Clive Davis’ J Records that never saw the light of day due to creative differences between the Austin-based singer and the label. While heart-rending at time, it was a blessing in disguise. Instead of turning her back on the music business and becoming bitter, Moore immersed herself in the creative process the most mature and compelling music of her career.
From the opening seductive lines of “Into The Sunset” (there was a boy, he was a young boy/he took his shirt off in the rain) through the lush jazzy melancholy of “Sorry,” Moore taps directly into the artistic vein. She delivers songs filled with life-blood that satisfy the soul.
The album may be called On The Way, but this emotionally expansive, musically diverse collection proves that in all the ways that count, Abra Moore has arrived.
