5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets, June 2, 2001
This review is from: Abracadaboum (Audio CD)
Is it punk? Is it ska? With Bérurier Noir it is hard to say... Equipped with a unique sound which defies genre classifications and a healthy amount of aggression, this French band truly stands in a league of its own. The lyrics are political and often rather sinister, but it is the music which really sets the Bérus apart. In 'Abracadaboum' the band uses an eclectic collection of instruments not usually associated with punk: saxophone, bagpipes, various stringed instruments and of course their hallmark, a frenetic drum machine. The resulting sound is a far cry from the gloomy angst of the lesser punk bands. In short: this is not only seminal, this stuff is essential. Be warned, though - 'Abracadaboum' will leave you jumping up and down and feeling anarchistic, not to mention wanting for more.
