History comes alive in a comic book,
By
This review is from: Abraham Lincoln: The Civil War President (Paperback)
This is a very fun way to learn about American history and have fun too. A fresh change from the boring history books normally found in schools. This comic book has a very interesting and entertaining story line that keeps you absorbed from the minute you start reading it. What makes it even more innovative is the fact that it is a true story based on true facts about Lincolns life. His ideals and values which formed the basis of his life are very articulately detailed in the book. Characters like Lincolns dog (which reminds one of Tintin's dog snowy) who carries the storyline along as an impartial observer and a woman who risks her life to fight alongside her beloved, captivate and endear the reader to the story. On the whole this book is very informative and entertaining and has the makings of a classic.

Excellent Resource,

I enjoyed this book even more than the kids. Good job on the history part of it. Never thought I would see an illustrated book for children deal with all the tough topics of the Civil War. Most of the books we buy play it safe. These guys must have used some historians because they touched on all the points like assasination, underground railroad, slave auctions etc. Nice use of the dog too. My kids loved that. They want to get a stuffed version of the darn dog. Darn it!

What a unique concept,

This review is from: Abraham Lincoln: The Civil War President (Paperback)
What a unique concept! I just got this book and it is really well done. It is written at two levels: adults & kids. I am amazed by the ability of the writer to add very serious discussions (underground railroad, assasination etc.) in a format that kids can understand. This book steers straight and narrow. There seems no attempt to push any agenda. It presents history as history and not as someone's point of view. I can see children re-reading this book as they grow older and getting more from it as their understanding and comprehension grows. I look forward to more books like this. They should do one about the Texas War of Independence. It is a complex subject matter and could use a treatment like this.

The history woven in an interesting comic book format is very accessible and child friendly; especially great for children who need a multi-sensory teaching approach. The visual colors, illustrations, and the comic book format is very appealing as a teaching supplement

Use it in the classroom too!,

Rarely does a book combine great art, education, and history like this one. Immediately I see my students pick up on the brillant color illustrations, which really depict the complex emotions of the characters without seeming overly comic-like. Yet I am also impressed by how well-researched the story is. In the future, I will give this to my 4th graders instead of the textbook section on Lincoln.

Should be noted for school and community librarians,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Abraham Lincoln: The Civil War President (Paperback)
Also available in a hardcover edition (097425021X, [...]), Abraham Lincoln: The Civil War President is about President Abraham Lincoln, his dog Fido, and the American Civil War as told in a "graphic novel" format by author Ginger Turner and animation illustrator Saral Tiwari. From Lincoln's path to the presidency, to the Battle of Gettysburg, to the Emancipation Proclamation, to the tragic assassination of President Lincoln, the attention to historical detail is as impressive as the collaborative storytelling abilities of Turner and Tiwari who combine text and illustration to present actual historic events that will engage readers ages 8 through adult from beginning to end because the graphic novel format is especially suited to bringing history alive in the minds and imaginations of the readers. It should be noted for school and community librarians, that Abraham Lincoln: The Civil War President is carefully mapped to the U.S. Department of Education's National Standards for teaching American History.

This graphic novel caught my eye when doing a search for teaching supplements for my grade schoolers. It's such an amazing yet simple concept-- using graphic novels to teach! The graphic novel provides a great insight into President Lincoln's accomplishments during his presidency and the Civil War. Not only does the book bring out the varied reasons for the Civil War such as State rights and slavery-- it also presents Lincoln in a unique perspective as a father and human being. I love using it as a reading supplement for my students -- the illustrations are amazingly detailed and captivating and helps get children interested in reading and learning more!

Well Done,

Well done!! My kids could not put this down. Now they have a million questions about the Civil War and about Lincoln. It is a nice change from "Mom, where can I get a radioactive spider bite" kind of questions. This is a good concept. I hope the publishers expand on it. I would like to suggest that they start from the beginning of North American European settlements in the 16th century and continue chronologically down to present day. I also read the review from the School Library Journal. That guy should be fired!! He is either a complete idiot or has never seen a real child. I do not understand what his beef with this book is. It is educational and fun for kids. This book is not for him. It is for kids. We need to encourage more quality books like this. Side note: My kids asked a lot of questions about topics that were related to the book. A little research may be required to answer those questions. |
