Book Description

March 21, 1984 Da Capo Paperback
Among the many novel features of this volume: It carefully examines Lincoln's views on a wide variety of subjects—economics, race, the Constitution, Indians, patronage, habeas corpus, and dozens more. It offers biographical sketches of members of Lincoln's family and describes how he felt about them, including his "rebel" sister-in-law and an enterprising cousin who used Lincoln's Presidential nomination to launch a flourishing souvenir business. It portrays and clearly captures scores of Lincoln's associates, assistants, colleagues, and enemies—from Charles Francis Adams and George Atzerodt to Fernando Wood and Richard Yates. It appraises all the major Lincoln biographers and their books and also covers others associated with the subject: collectors and collections, portrait painters and photographers, famous documents and sites.

5.0 out of 5 stars An important reference work, August 24, 2007
This review is from: The Abraham Lincoln Encyclopedia (Da Capo Paperback) (Paperback)
This book is useful to anyone seriously interested in Lincoln, as useful as a dictionary is to a writer. I routinely consult it to refresh my memory of a date or to recall interactions among various Lincoln associates. Articles include a list of sources for deeper knowledge of topics. Lavishly illustrated. Superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars the abraham lincoln encyclopedia, July 9, 2005
By
This encyclopedia is full of articles on the people places and events in President Lincoln's personal and public life as well as articles on the most prominent students and specialists on the subject of Abraham Lincoln.

One can read about important figures such as Seward, Wells, and Douglas, and some of the real people who became a part of Lincoln lore such as Grace Bedell and the Clary Grove Boys.

For those of us who are fans of President Lincoln and interested in reading about him and his era, this is a special book. A past girlfriend purchased this for me and I am grateful she did.
