Editorial Reviews

With a successful and eclectic career in both the record and film industries, Henry Jackman's musical work has ranged from chart topping collaborations with Mike Oldfield, Marc Almond, Coolio and Seal, to the esoteric as well as summer blockbusters, The Dark Night, Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man s Chest and Puss In Boots, to art house projects. He combines a unique range of skills, which include classical composition, orchestral arrangement, beat programming, sound design, production and mixing. His orchestral compositions have been performed and recorded by musicians from the London Symphony Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. His ability to work alongside leading orchestral players and conductors is a vital part of his work.

The opening strings strike just the right notes for this soundtrack--a warm violin mix that gradually become ominous, and is quickly followed by a haunting, wordless vocal that keeps you anxiously on the edge of your seat. Electronics are used effectively, both as background effects, and weaving in and out of the music itself--footfalls, night noises surge around you in a frightening kaleidoscope. Basses throb and hum and then suddenly, out of no where, a climax at the end of "Vampires" wrench you around. The Double Bass is used frequently in the soundtrack, with an interesting vibrato. Rock rhythms also can be found, especially in tracks such as "What do you hate?", where a steady drum beat and rapid attack strings sound like the intro to an anthem. This is a very interesting soundtrack musically, bearing a lot of influence from Hans Zimmer; this is no crime, espeically since Zimmer has been a mentor of sorts for Jackman, and it is clear that Jackman took his lessons to heart. A very good soundtrack that will hold up with repeated listens. I can't wait to listen to this in succession with the Batman trilogy soundtracks!

Last year Henry Jackman catapulted into the mainstream consciousness with his score to X-Men: First Class. The score was so perfect. He was able to blend hard electronics with the orchestra to create a brash summer sound yet he somehow injected a strong emotional pull. The X-Men: First Class score pulled tears from me in several places. That score is probably what landed him this film right here. Many of the elements that made his X-Men score so great can be found in full glory here.

This is a rather big sounding score that has two sides. The gothic horror side plays underneath the big swelling themes he has written for Abe. In fact, the middle of the score is where the gothic action/horror lies. The music has a pulsating energy that rises up and thrusts you into a thrilling ride. That emotional pull he had in X-Men can be found here as well, but in a much smaller dosage. Jackman tries to humanize the score a bit in the first track and maybe once or twice throughout. It doesn't come close to the emotional effect that X-Men had, but it's there and it's appreciated. The score finishes on a great note as he sums up everything in a nice swelling fashion.

This is a great summer score that you can enjoy over and over again. It has fantastic melodies laced with gothic action. There is a harshness to the score that some may find unpleasant, but if you've heard his X-Men score then you should know what to expect. I loved it. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has all the ingredients I'm looking for in a gritty and grungy action score. Henry Jackman once again proves he's a master of tone and flavor as he really nails it here. Don't dwell too much on this one, but it should give you a few decent months of listening pleasure and it'll be fun to stumble across it later down the road.

This is my first soundtrack by Henry Jackman and I found it breath taking. I loved both the book and the movie, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter". The soundtrack added so much to the story. Beautifully done.
