Book Description

Before he was President, Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer, and he wrote this little-known essay with his advice on law practice, from avoiding litigation to practicing extemporaneous speaking. Above all, is integrity. "[R]esolve to be honest at all events; and if in your own judgment you cannot be an honest lawyer, resolve to be honest without being a lawyer." Former judge Frank Ceresi provides commentary and the book includes a thoughtful introduction by Professor Brian Dirck, the foremost expert on Lincoln's career as a lawyer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice summary of what Lincoln learned as a lawyer November 26, 2012
This is a good description of some of what Lincoln learned as a lawyer along with a nice, concise commentary on what those lessons mean to those practicing today. This is a primer that all lawyers might care to read, and learn from.

3.0 out of 5 stars A short gloss on a short outline November 25, 2012

Abraham Lincoln's Law Note is a very brief set of notes - about three to four pages - that Lincoln seems to have written down sometime during the 1850s. Snippets of Lincoln's advice contained in this note are very familiar, suggesting that they have made their way into collections of Lincoln's quotes. This book adds another four to five pages of a kind of commentary on some of the points made by Lincoln.

So, in all, this text is probably no more than ten pages in length, a short pamphlet in length. Lincoln's advice is worthwhile; the commentary less so, but still it's not bad.

For $.99, it's not a bad thing to look at if you are a fan of Lincoln, or a lawyer looking for some quick, aphoristic advice on the practice of law, or both. If you are otherwise disposed, you will probably be disappointed by your investment.
