Editorial Reviews

This 1970 reissue is a perfect example of the intense and rhythmical style of New York salsa music from the heyday. The album has an intense and raw sound that todays salseros have been unable to duplicate. Ismael Miranda penned some of the best tracks including the title track, ''Donde Llevas El Son'', ''Bien Mi Guaguanco'', and more. In his vocal prime, Ismael Miranda easily flows through the varied arrangements and track styles. Backed up by possibly one of the best orchestras with Larry Harlow at the helm, the album is a must-have for all Salsa fans!

This 1970 album is A MUST HAVE (A HAVE OR DIE) for the REAL listeners of the HIGHLY intense and rhythmical style of New York salsa music from the good old days!... The album's intensity is very powerful, the music is quite raw (so definitely not for the 'faint hearted') and the excitement is ALL OVER THE PLACE, HERE!

Ismael Miranda, ONCE AGAIN, broke his head to compose 5 songs in this album, which turned out to be part of what the album had best to offer, OBVIOUSLY! (Abran Paso, Donde Llevas El Son, Abandonada Fué, Oigan Bien Mi Guaguancó, and Dolór Y Amór)!

The title track Abran Paso was this album's biggest hit, also because it appeared in the Fania movie Our Latin Thing back in 1972. (The video of this song from the movie is available at youtube, but I prefer MUCH MUCH MORE this album's more intense and exciting version).

Donde Llevas El Son ('Ven, yo quiero bailar ahora el son!') is a very enjoyable and powerful rock-solid sort of Son-Chá with very good and long arrangements, also including a piano solo by Larry Harlow.

Se casa La Rumba is a song that shifts up a gear rhythmically compared to the previous tune, with a faster paced rhythm and a more aggressive sort of chorus consisting in the whole album, by the way, of: Marcelíno Guerra, Eladio Peguero 'Yayo El Indio', Justo Betancourt and also Santos Colón in some songs I believe. (He is not credited, but I'm almost sure that I did hear him involved in the chit-chat at the very beginning of Donde Llevas El Son.)

With the more musical Abandonada Fué we go back to the Ismael Miranda 'melancholically frustrated love' style of song with the lyrics: 'Jugastes, conmigo! Pero no con mi corazón!

What else can I say about this AGELESS MASTERPIECE that has not already been said? This is one of the most DYNAMIC, FIERY and EXPLOSIVE Salsa albums/CDs ever made...and one that literally DEMANDS that you pump it up REAL LOUD on your stereo system so that you can experience the RAW POWER of this music. "Abandonada Fue", "Donde Llevas El Son", "Vengo Virao" and the hit title track are the true standouts but this is one of those CDs that contain NO FILLER TRACKS whatsoever. This classic album proves just why the Larry Harlow/Ismael Miranda combination was so special but (for better or worse) it led to Ismael Miranda's subsequently embarking on his own solo career as his popularity as a singer had skyrocketed and his going solo was inevitable. Enjoy!

first of all. you are getting two for the price of one:
# 1.
harlow --- amazing pianist ( no joke ! ).
# 2.
miranda --- great voice period

i think that it's safe to say that if your are interested in knowing the sounds of salsa ( CLASSICAL salsa that is), i suggest that you hear track (1) " abran paso 3:26. --- the first 17 sec ( already takes your socks off) are brassical ( a word ? ) with two tones / two volumes introduction ( it's like hearing two love birds singing to each other) perfect !

track (2) "donde llevas as el son" 5:01. is smooth / explosive ! --- you will be immediately captivated ( 2:30) by the way harlow plays the piano ( he's really nice)...3:11 is filled with the trombone / trombet ( another score ---unblievablly surrounded by brass tone color (2:30 - 3:27)).
furthermore. track (4) " abandonada fue" 6:05 ( i once had a woman that broke my heart ( you live and learn) --- these lyrics define reality).

:(
:)
:o

your ears will fly away ( metaphor) after hearing 1:34 - 2:33 --- the ORHESTRA beween these minutes are mind blowing ( really)...at the end ( 2:33) miranda's sweet voice comes in ( ** PERFECTLY COMPLIMENTING THE SOUNDS OF P-U-R-E RHYTHM **).

enjoy.
