$375. ref With 1,600,000 citations to 115 biographical sources, this abridgment of Miranda Herbert and Barbara McNeil's Biography and Genealogy Master Index ( LJ 6/1/81) shares its limitations. Entries are cited as given in the original sources, with little attempt to consolidate, and cross references to pseudonyms or variant spellings of names are not provided. Though the work purports to provide worldwide, current, and retrospective coverage of persons in all fields, almost half the sources are literary biography, about one fourth general, and the remainder special subjects. Some fieldsnotably business, politics, and scienceare not well represented. However, the sources indexed are more likely to be found in smaller libraries, the intended audience.
