Beautiful, intricate music,
By Si Furr (Manchester, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Absa Gueye 1 (Audio CD)
I have been struggling to find a copy of this on CD - it is from a small label in Africa. We have a copy on tape and this music is genuinely great - not like a lot of the soft Westernised mush that some African performers have released (understandably). N'Guire Na is probably my favourite overall - but it depends on the mood. Anyway, if you find it buy it

As Good As It Gets,
By Diddley Squat "Diddley Squat" (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Absa Gueye 1 (Audio CD)
You won't find classic West African music better than this collection. Such hits from the late 60s to mid 70s as "Absa Gueye" and "Jalo" set the pace for the modern sound of Senegal even today. I've had the privilege of seeing them perform live many years ago. And waching Assane Thiam, the drummer on "Absa Gueye" (and probably most of the band's recordings), is astounding. The narrow tight drums that make the rippling sound are played with the fingers of one hand moving so fast you literally can't see them. It should be on video.
