I admit I was not looking forward to this book. I hated Faulkner in high school, and as a homeschool Mom now needed to read and understand this book in order to assign it to my 10th grader. Since I do a lot of driving for my part-time job I decided to try the audiobook. Wow. What a difference. Gardner's Southern accent and interpretations of all the characters make this story come alive. If I had been reading it, I would have been tempted to skim and skip "boring" sections, but the audio forces you to hear and appreciate every word. I guarantee if you know every vocabulary word in the book you will ace the SAT vocabulary section! I learned some great new ones. The story is slow and winding and repetititve in plot sometimes, but it works its way into your bones and you are helplessly caught up in the lives of the characters as they move slowly towards their fate. I can't wait to share it with my son, and have decided I will have him do the audiobook as well.
