Great first exposure to rock drums,

This product really deserves a good review.I have no background in music or drums. I am a beginner. In fact I am not even planing to learn drums, but just watched this video purely out of curiosity when I found it in the library. I think that this product is good for teaching kids or other beginners rock drums to see if they like the idea of learning drums. The simplicity of the lessons was so compelling that I pulled out a pair of chopsticks and started trying some of the rhythms on some tea cups. You could definitely give a try to drumming with this DVD just tapping your feet for the bass drum and using some pencils or sticks as drumsticks on any makeshift items as drums and cymbals. Drumming is all about learning coordination and timing. The video was extremely well structured and moved along slowly, but not so slowly as to be boring. It really goes form the absolute beginning. The video quality is very clear and all images are easy to see (as opposed to certain other drum videos I also checked out of the library). This video starts you out with the simplest possible drum kit and explains every term slowly and clearly, building up a vocabulary... snare, cymbal, shaft, [...], etc. Then the video leads you through building up a musical vocabulary, teaching basic drum sheet music and rhythms. In addition to a straight-through instructional lecture, the dvd has options to play background music for each drum exercise so you can easily take one exercise at a time and practice the basic lessons from the instructional part of the video. The dvd comes with a useful 32-page booklet that has additional instructions and includes the drum sheet music that goes along with the lessons. The focus of this instructional video is a rock drum set and learning rock rhythms. The instructional lessons are all rock rhythms. This is not for Afro-Carribean, classical music, or other drumming. Finishing the video I already feel much more educated and will probably listen to rock music more closely and understand the sounds better. This dvd is highly recommended.
