Book Description

Absolute Beginners Guide December 14, 2001
When someone first gets a PC, they want to do something with it. They've heard all the great things that can be done with a computer, but they have no idea how to get started. They may want to write a letter, send an e-mail message, check out some Web sites, manage their finances, listen to music, or play games. This book identifies 75 tasks that readers would want to do with their computer, and shows them how to "Do It Now." Activities are grouped into categories such as communicating online, managing finances, buying and selling online, working with pictures, creating fun projects, playing and recording music, watching TV and movies, and dealing with problems. When readers have completed the book, they will be surprised how much they can do.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Both of these titles are aimed at newcomers to Windows XP PCs. Magid's The Little PC Book is a standard in the field, and the XP edition displays the same clarity as its predecessors by providing "just enough" information to get a new PC up and running. Recommended; libraries owning older editions should also purchase for coverage of XP's new features. Absolute Beginner's Guide covers similar ground but goes a step further by showing beginners how to accomplish cool and useful tasks (e.g., finding weather reports online and creating a table in Word). This variety of tasks can be bewildering, however, and many of them assume ownership of software tools that may not be installed on readers' PCs. Novices would be better served by guides to the individual programs. An optional purchase for public libraries.
