WordPerfect for Smarties,
By
This review is from: Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect 12 (Paperback)
Laura Acklen's "Absolute Beginner's Guide" books are crafted in rare clarity by a teacher that understands the learning process. She starts with two assumptions. One, you are somewhat familiar with Windows, and two, those yellow books are *not* calling your name!
Each chapter begins with "In This Chapter" learning goals. You are introduced to basic features and those "wow, it can do that!" features in a mix that keeps your interest while you become grounded in the essentials. The chapters end with a companion "The Absolute Minimum" summary that allows you to decide if you're ready to move on. The "Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect" accomplishes seemingly disparate goals. In addition to learning from the beginning, it serves the experienced user as a refresher course, and the Microsoft Word user gets converted to a much more complete program. After you have completed it, the book cover will get curly corners as it serves as a handy reference right between your keyboard and your coffee mug.

Excellent reference for beginners,
By
This review is from: Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect 12 (Paperback)
This book is well-written and very easy to follow. It is a comprehensive learning tool for those new to WordPerfect, presenting material in a way that will make the learning curve much less steep.
I only wish books like this had been around when I first started learning word processing, twenty years ago. (Most software manuals then were written by the same people who coded the programs, and most of those had few of the skills that are evident in Laura's books.) When you finish "Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect 12" you should have learned enough to advance from "Beginner" to "Intermediate" status!

WordPerfect and seniors,
By
This review is from: Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect 12 (Paperback)
I have been teaching beginning word processing using MS Word to new senior students. Now that new computers are shipping with Corel WordPerfect, I needed a text to use for instruction. This Beginner's Guide fits the task to the student and has proven to be a hit with them. I would recommend the book highly.

So far it has been very good! I am learning a lot in a world I didn't know much about. I have Word 2002 and this is perfect for the WordPerfect 12. I am still learning to work the differance between of the two of them. KM

Quattro Pro 12 in This Book,
By
This review is from: Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect 12 (Paperback)
This book came up 7th when I did a search on Amazon for "Quattro Pro 12." Looking at the Table of Contents online, it does cover Quattro Pro to some extent, namely devoting about 40 pages in Appendixes to it. This looks like the only book on Amazon if one is looking for a text description of Quattro Pro 12; the other "books" on Amazon which cover the topic are Quick Reference Guides. The Corel User Guide for Word Perfect Office 12 devotes some 62 pages to Quattro Pro.

I am glad I purchased this. Like the approach and the writing. My favorite, even over the "Dummies" book.

Good instructions, but it's very difficult to hold the pages open to follow the instructions. Had to copy pages and then put them in a binder that would stay open.

Disappointed,
By Hedda Cox (Tennessee) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Absolute Beginner's Guide to WordPerfect 12 (Paperback)
I ordered this book for a complete novice who had just bought his first computer and had no knowledge of computers or word processors. In reviewing the book, I was disappointed that terms were used which would not be understood by someone who had never used a computer or word processor. I had hoped it would contain step-by-step lessons with pictures and descriptions, but was very much disappointed. I would not recommend this book for a beginner.
