4.0 out of 5 stars If you're in the mood to be really spooked, November 27, 2003

This review is from: Absolute Black (Paperback)
The best thing about these stories is the way the author writes about grisly violence. He never describes it explicitly, just with a few choice words so you come away with a feeling of revulsion even though the details are mostly in your head. Don't look for the slightest bit of comic relief or anything about pop culture in this book. It's all totally serious. The story about the haunted school is a classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars moody, creepy stuff, August 29, 2003

This review is from: Absolute Black (Paperback)
Not satisfied with just freaking the reader out with the usual flat-out shocks and suspense, which this book is definitely filled with, the author tries to go deeper, and I'm still not sure if this is a good or a bad thing....there is a lot of psychological stuff going on here, not all of it entirely clear to me, but it does make you feel like you got more than just a cheap thrill...easily the best story in here is "You're Scaring the Children", it's just totally eerie, and the deepest is "Adagio For Night"....what it really means, I'm not sure, but reading it at 2 a.m. alone in my bedroom, I was basically too creeped out to care.
