4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for a beginner
It is a great book for someone who doesn't have any programming experience. It is very thorough. If you have any programming experience this book is going to seem extremely boring. The first half of the book is more of an introduction to programming in general. Overall I think it is a good book but not a must have.

3.0 out of 5 stars Thorough but difficult to understand at times
I needed this book for my introduction to C++ Programming class. It is very thorough but difficult to understand at points for the beginner. It will definitely come in handy as I progress further in my studies.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book, No Access Code, September 15, 2009
This review is from: Absolute C++ (4th Edition) (Paperback)
I agree with most of the reviews here, yes, it is a very good C++ book. I gave 4 star because of the access code, not the content of this book.

I learnt C++ very long ago and my text books are way out of date. Recently I have to do some programming, so I bought this book to refresh my C++ syntax, and to use it as a reference. I have to say I really enjoyed it. I like how things are well organized, and how comprehensive this book is. Sometimes the author goes too much in detail explaining very simple concept and common mistakes, but they are marked in different sessions/colors so that advanced readers can easily skip them.

One warning though. The author says there should to be an access code attached to the book, for free access to the source codes and self-test solutions at [...]. It says if you purchased a new book, then a code card should be included. Well, I can not find it. I don't know if I had mistakenly thrown it away with the package, or Amazon simply did not send it (and later sell it separately?). A mystery there.

It's another $[...] for the 4th edition access code if you decide to buy it separately ([...]). Considering I paid $[...] already for the book, it is a bit over-priced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Savitch rules, September 29, 2010
This review is from: Absolute C++ (4th Edition) (Paperback)
This book is an indispensable member of my library. It was a great text for both Intro to Computing I & Intro to Computing II. Savitch is such a patient author. He consistently takes you from a point of knowledge that you know to a new point in which you are fundamentally, unshakably sound. I refer back to this text often. I know Savitch is an elder statesman now. My hope is that he has passed on his skill as an author to the next couple of generations of authors. I owe much to him because of his down to earth, no nonsense style of teaching. I also use "Absolute Java" by Savitch. Many thanks to Mr. Walter!
