4.0 out of 5 stars Bad reproduction. Really probably better off with the trade paperback.
On the outside, this is a gorgeous volume, and it looks good on a bookshelf. However I don't recommend anyone be introduced to Kingdom Come this way. I don't know if its the enlarged pages or what, but the reproduction of Alex Ross's glorious art looks surprisingly grainy, with rather dull and degraded colors. Kingdom Come is a great story, which is why this still gets four stars, but DC Comics get a huge middle finger for making the actual COMIC look so ugly on the page.

Buy the trade. It's about sixty bucks cheaper and looks much, much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Stunning, November 7, 2006
This review is from: Absolute Kingdom Come (Hardcover)
When I read Kingdom Come for the first time, I had no idea what to expect. After reading it though ,I can tell you I was completely blown away. I had never seen Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman portrayed like this before. The themes in Kingdom Come are very dark and realistic. It is about the price of being a hero. When DC anounced they were releasing a special edition to commemorate the tenth anniversary, I was a bit skeptical at first. How much better could this storyline be? Let me tell you that this story line is just as compelling as the first time through. The beautiful artwork from the great Alex Ross is preserved in this over-sized edtiton along with a slipcase cover featuring new artwork from the master artist. There is so much supplementary material icluded that any hardcore fan will truly appreciate it. Kindom Come is an underrated story that derserves to stand up there with The Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns as one of the greatest comic storylines of all time. It still resonates with the themes of today's society. This is a classic that no fan should miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME MUST BUY, August 18, 2006

If you have never read Kingdom Come then you will love this. If you have read Kingdom Come you will love this more. I have the original issues and read them twice. Then I bought the trade so I could get the extra twelve pages. Lost it, bought a new one, then found the old one. This Absolute Edition is like a DVD Special Edition with the "wide-screen" pages and tons of extra including transcripts, sketches, etc.

Originally intended to be future of the DC Universe it became an Elseworlds tale but is so driven into the DC Mythos because it reminds you of the Trinity which is Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Three completely different tactics (in any age) but the same underlying goal. Also it reminds the readers that Superman can be assumed to be a "god" but he does not believe that nor wishes it. But his "godness" is what forever will seperate him from humanity.

There is more to say but I don't want to ruin it. Save your money so you can buy the Absolute Edition.

3.0 out of 5 stars Waiting for the real ultimate Kingdom Come..., May 20, 2011
This review is from: Absolute Kingdom Come (Hardcover)
While Kingdom Come is still one of the best stories ever of the DC universe, and the extra sketches and bonus materials of this edition are really top notch, this was really another wasted opportunity to have an ultimate collector version of this story.
I agree the art looks way too grainy, but on the bright side the colors do look considerably more vibrant than in the original Kingdom Come issues. I have done side by side comparisons of both the single issues, the first printing Hardcover edition and the Absolute Kingdom Come and I am guessing the publishers somehow increased the size of the original prints and tried to touch up the colors, but it's a shame that they could not reuse the original paintings for this. Looking at gorgeous oversized Ross works like Superman Peace on Earth it is really quite obvious this is the case. I don't know what would be worst, that the new second edition had this fixed (and I were stuck with the grainy version) or that there was no change in the new edition and I had to wait another 10 years for another revision that might fix this.

The story is magnificent, the wide array of background characters and new characters provides a rich backdrop for the conflict, and the artwork is absolutely amazing.

A ground-breaking must-read for any fan of DC comics characters!

If you have ever enjoyed anything painted by Alex Ross, this will be no exception. Certainly there are a few versions of this story out by now, but this has to be the most complete. I owned the signed limited edition (the two-book edition in a slipcase, signed by the writers) which was a great find. However, this has more in it, and if signatures mean nothing to you, then I would recommend this one. The treasury size is also a great touch. Nothing beats seeing your favourite DC Heroes as large as possible.

5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome addition to any library, January 26, 2010
This review is from: Absolute Kingdom Come (Hardcover)
I first purchased Kingom Come as individual volumes upon their first release. I rarely have time to go through my collection, so DC Absolute Editions and Marvel's Omnibus collections are great ways to enjoy classic stories right off the bookshelf. Kingdom Come is a perfect example of this. Alex Ross' art leaps off the page with boundless energy and enormous impact. This is arguably his best work, less "washed out" than his later work on Justice and more skilled than his earlier work on Marvels. The larger format and added material from the graphic novel make this volume a great piece to own, just as a piece of art. In my opinion Mark Waid's story is what makes this a great book. His intimate portayal of the "Big Three" and his inclusion of some of DC's lesser known properties, all told from a very human perspective, make this a lynchpin in comics. A must own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant Piece of Work, June 11, 2009
This review is from: Absolute Kingdom Come (Hardcover)
It's complex yet very simple. The premise is wonderfully done. You don't even need to fully know the history of all the characters to easily follow along. For long time fans, it's a treat. I recommend to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars ....THY WILL LOVE THIS BOOK!!!, December 26, 2006
This review is from: Absolute Kingdom Come (Hardcover)
When I first bought and read the original Kingdom Come series, I had them signed by Alex Ross. I thought that was great back then. Reading this in the 'absolute format' just takes my breath away. Everything you could appreciate about this series comes out like gangbusters. You will not want to but it down. Buy It!!! Keep It!!!
