Brilliant..., January 2, 2002
This review is from: Absolute Purity (Audio CD)
I have on thing to say: BRILLIANT! I know nothing about Hate Eternal or Morbid Angel (other than the name and that they are apparently the best bands in the genre of death metal), but if this is an idication of Erik Rutan's songwriting and his abiliies as a guitarist, then I have to say he has quickly become one of my favorites. The music is technically proficient, and the interplay between the band members is nothing short of exceptional. And above all, it is some of the most emotional metal I've ever heard. Every track has it's own feeling, but they all mesh together so well, it becomes impossible to pick a favorite. Every song is wonderful! It doesn't get more melodic than this...and Martina Aster's voice is beautiful! I swear, her singing on this album is breathy, operatic, and could put Sarah Brightman to shame (not that I like Sarah Brightman, but she does have a good voice). It makes me want to listen to everything Therion, just to hear Aster's voice. Anyway, Alas is one of the best sounding bands I've ever heard, and I look forward to future albums. If you like atmospheric, melodic metal...this is the album for you.

Proof that Death Metal musicians have versitility, June 14, 2004
This review is from: Absolute Purity (Audio CD)
Possibly the best band with a female vocalist. Sounds a bit like Nightwish and Epica only a lot heavier and better. This album should shut up all those people who say Death Metal musicians lack the skill to do anything but make a career out of playing one riff over and over again, since Eric Rutan (Morbid Angel, Hate Eternal) plays for this band and it couldn't possibly sound more different from his other bands. Every song on here is great fans of the genre and metal fans in general will find alot to like about this album.

A Must Have Metal Classic!, February 25, 2004
This review is from: Absolute Purity (Audio CD)
If your an Eric Rutan fan<Morbid Angel,Ripping Corpse,Hate Eternal> then you HAVE to pick up this album! It's different from his previous works and DUDE it kicks ASS! Alas is nothing short of brilliant! The demo included Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse, but this new line-up is formidable indeed with talent! Whats cooler is that Therion is one of my favorite bands and Martina the female vocalist from previous band IS THE LEAD VOCALIST FOR ALAS!! How awesome is that!! This album is emotionally sung, GREAT Melodies, and POWERFUL double-bass drumming. Every song is awesome and unique. This is a MUST buy, 5 stars WITHOUT A DOUBT!
