4.0 out of 5 stars Vootie Rootie!, November 7, 2007
This review is from: Absolute Voutest '46 (Audio CD)
Vootie Rootie! Slim & Slam are the sensationally loquacious Slim Gaillard & longtime collaborator Slam Stewart, two entertainers at the peak of their powers when these lively cuts were laid down.

Hard to describe the shtick here, but if you enjoy a good time, or kickin' it with a stiff cocktail or some muggles, you'll do fine. Sorta like a live set by Louis Prima, the rollicking playful music & interplay by the all star band transends the lack of crisp hi-fi technology.

Yes it's "vintage" but worry not about any Poppity Pops !

File under "ol school" fun and discover a couple jazz & jive innovators who created something that's missing in today's music scene.

Any audiophiles prone to complaining about a few "poppity pops" might be missing the joys in this rare live recording made 60+ years ago. The hysterical audience cutting up to Gaillard's onstage hijinx is half the fun-a-roonie. I suppose ya had to be there in the smokey haze, but this as close as you can get to that levity today.

Supposedly culled from a live radio performance in June 1946, Slim is joined by bassist & comic foil Bam Brown along with drummer Leo Watson. Also included are excerpts from two soundies filmed around that time featuring Scatman Crothers "shining" away on drums.
