Editorial Reviews

Review

"A fun, fast-paced read loaded with well-developed characters and believable, fully realized settings. This is one of those rare sequels that almost outshines its predecessor, and readers who haven't read Redemption are brought up to speed quickly." - RT Book Reviews, 4 1/2 stars (HOT)

Another slam dunk for Susannah Sandlin! I loved Absolution, even more than Redemption, the first in the series - which was a 5-star read for me. Mirren Kincaid, a former assassin turned vampire, believes he is not redeemable and is still punishing himself for his past sins. He is likable right away for his loyalty and unselfishness. He doesn't drink the heroine, even when he's starving and she's given to him on a silver platter, so to speak. He's the "quiet strength" type, which I found totally sexy. Glory Cummings sees past his mixed signals and offers Mirren what he never expected - compassion. I loved how she figured out how to "feed" him, just one example of Sandlin's very creative writing style which kept me riveted. I adore "blindsided by love" stories, and this hero doesn't even see it coming. His transformation is inspiring, and it goes to show how love brings out the best in people. One of my favorite reads this year! Impatiently waiting for #3...

I really like this series, it's fun and well-written while remaining fairy light and entertaining. I'm impressed by how realistic the characters' dialog is which is a deal-breaker for me. It also stays more on the PG-13 side of paranormal romance than most books nowadays which makes them perfect for reading in the lunchroom or in public. I love the "wilder" stuff but I just can't enjoy it on the bus! ;)
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series!

See my book blog for the giveaway for the book tour of this book, and others. My link is in my profile.

I love this series, its was such a great change from some of the lesser quality vampire books out there. This one is like True Blood with some Night Huntress thrown in, with its own unique spin. I enjoyed the first book Redemption a lot, and fell in love them with series even more after reading this book.
I think its best to read Redemption first, before this one. But the author does take the time to explain key points that happened in the first, in this one. But to me, you would be missing out on some important things that just makes the story that much better. In this one, there will be consequences to actions from the first one, which I think is better to read about first hand.

I fell in love with Aiden and his ideas, how he treats humans as friends and family, not like cattle, like many of the rest of the vampire population. As we learned in book one, the vaccine to a virus epidemic is poison to the vampires, so they can only feed from un-vaccinated humans. Which is in short supply, the vampires are starving. Well, Aiden had set up a town, of un-vaccinated humans, who agrees to be their familiars and donate blood too. They get to live in peace in this ghost town that Aiden bought and turned into a thriving town for his people. He is very selective on who can come to this town. Only vampires that are bonded to him and his "scathe" can live there, and from there, all the humans are bonded to a vampire in the scathe, which keeps them safe from any other vampires to try to feed from them. When they are bonded like that, the other vampires can't touch them. Keeps them safe this way. So the humans that are there are protected in this way.

If you have not read Redemption, the first book in the Penton Vampire Legacy series, I strongly, strongly urge you to read that one first. This book holds its own enough to be read out of sync but you will enjoy it much more if you know the first story. A brief summary: There was a pandemic for which a vaccine was developed for humans. Unfortunately, the sole food supply for vampires is humans and this vaccine has basically rendered people toxic to vampires. I have read books where vampires can drink animal blood but for this one it is not an option. The focus of Redemption is Aidan Murphy, who has created a group of vampires and unvaccinated humans called a scathe in Penton, Alabama where humans and vampires live in their own little utopia where everyone is happy, healthy and well-fed. Naturally, all the other starving vampires of the world see this as a threat because Aidan has amassed so much unspoken power and he has the Vampire Tribunal (old vampires who are corrupt who run vampire laws... think politicians) quaking in their boots (no one wears a cape in this book to my knowledge). The Penton community is the focus of both books, but Redemption centers on Aidan and this book, Absolution, centers on Mirren.

I will tell you that there are some things that were not so "legal" done in Redemption but I will not ruin them for you, but they do come into play in Absolution. Mirren used to work for the Tribunal as their hired hitman known as "The Slayer". He is a very large vampire (six feet, eight inches), very muscular and very, very well trained as an assasin. Mirren is kidnapped by Matthias, one of the most corrupt vamps on the Tribunal. Matthias also kidnaps a woman whom he feels has "talent" and can be used for nefarious purposes.

Susannah Sandlin delivers another remarkable, compelling installment in this paranormal romance that ends with a bang! 'Redemption' was thrilling as we learned about traumatic events and turmoil in the vampire world. However, 'Absolution' is a stand-alone, which I found as fascinating as 'Redemption.' What I found incredible is the fact that the author's unique writing provided the reader with enough information to understand what was happening at the present time as we continue to learn about the immortals and a dangerous mission. The Slayer is as ruthless as ever, with his bloodthirsty nature. Glory is held prisoner, but tries to help Mirren. A virus epidemic is lethal to the vampires and they are starving as Aiden sets up a community for un-vaccinated humans, where they are safe from harm. He is very selective in his choices as they all bond to become protected. Could Glory help Mirren, before it's too late? Does Mirren find love, and will there be everlasting peace? The chilling story has the reader mesmerized, the setting is picture-perfect, and the characters come to life. The entire series is outstanding as the sequel becomes the delicious frosting on the cake. Highly recommended for paranormal and vampire lovers!
