4.0 out of 5 stars Better than his debut !!! 3*5 stars, May 20, 2008
Really a mixtape but plays like a full album, there are some top tunes on here, tip obviously is nice behind the boards but you can't deny that he has got nice table skillz too. The standout tracks being the awesome track "i got rhythm" ft royce da 59 with a delightful sample of the classic 50's Lena Horne etitled i got my man (this is a club banger). Another fave being "Listen" ft Heavy D, the bass lines bounces effortlessly, reminds me of Erick Sermon track from his insomnia album from 95. the opening joint (a remix) ft Busta rhymes called "for the nasty" is a real head nodder dilla like in sound with the keys and the drum crack, all said and done this is a very worthy purchase and worthy of any hiphop fan. Other worthy joints are "black boy" "scram jones" and the obvious joint "Official" Don't sleep on tip. All said and done this isn't strictly a hiphop album to vibe to it obvious that Kamaal has dipped his hand into the funk, jazz as a bit of rock on this album, so be warned. Still a nice album. We await his other release later this month with great anticipation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the trouble!, January 14, 2009
By Frank Morris (Detroit, MI) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've been a fan of Q-tip for about 10 years now, and though like alot of people who consider themselves true hip-hop heads (im not 1. My favorite artist is Prince and though I like some hip hop, Im more in2 "Neo"soul) I didn't really care 2 much for his debut "Amplified" with the exception of a few songs. Back in 2003 I got my hands on his unreleased album "Kamaal the Abstract" and was simply blown away at how ballsy and innovative and abstract it was 4 a hip-hop artist with it's excursions in2 rap/rock/jazz...sometimes all in the same song!Due 2 record company politics, as well as the fact that they felt it wasn't commercial enough, it was shelved. I'd heard a few years later that he had another album that would sadly be unreleased and it wasnt until rumors of his finally released, excellent 2008 "the Renaissance" album that I really started searching for "Abstract Innovations". I ordered it from here in November 2008 and it never arrived. I got my money back and desperately went on the search 4 this cd and finally found it 4 a reasonable price on a obscure New Zealand web site and I put my money down real quick. It arrived within 2 weeks and I'm happy 2 say it was definitely worth the trouble and the wait! 3 of the songs ended up on The Renaissance in much improved versions: "Johnny Died" is now "Johnny is Dead", and has alternate lyrics and chorus, as well as some guitar missing from the final mix. "Official" is the same on both versions, and "I believe" featuring D'angelo also has some alternate lyrics and musical differences. The standout tracks are:
*That's sexy feat. Andre 3000
*Request
*Lisa
*Hey
*Poetry feat Erykah Badu

So if U can get your hands on this, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!
