Editorial Reviews

Rainer Trüby is a former member of Germany's internationally known project A Forest Mighty Black from the classic label, Compost. After splitting with them, he developed his own project, Trüby Trio (which in fact, is Rainer Trüby with Christian Prommer & Roland Appel from the group Fauna Flash). Their styles fit somewhere between Jazz, Trip-Hop, House, and Downbeat. He has compiled numerous compilations, such as Gilles Peterson’s Talkin' Jazz III, Root Down 99 for Nuphonic Recordings, and also with Trüby Trio for the DJ Kicks compilation on !K7.

Truby brings those skills to the table once again with his latest mix on Nite Grooves, Abstract Jazz Journey. Here he gets more into the realm of the 4/4, deep with jazz-influenced undertones while maintaining soulful integrity based in his underground roots.

Compiling a tracklist from King Street & Nite Grooves vast catalog and including a few gems of his own, one truly gets to experience the mind of this talented artist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slammin' Cuts for the Summer Nights, May 13, 2005
This review is from: Abstract Jazz Journey (Audio CD)
Don't have to say much about Rainer Truby. Hailing on the Compost label, he was a member of the great Forest Mighty Black and still is with Truby Trio. He's done loads of works; in addition to making hits and remixes with Truby Trio, he had his own 5 disc series which featured fusion cuts with a Brazilian flavor titled "Glucklich". This one's a bit outside of the releases I've heard of him but is consistent in what's turned out to be a huge year for broken beats, jazz house and just Rainer Truby himself.

Abstract Jazz Journey's a great mixed disc of some exclusive tracks and remixes. It starts out with the original version of "Justice, Mercy" by Ananda project - a song without the beat but that's setting the mood for a dreamy journey. The cut seems to have had a heavy playback in 2005, featured on Ananda Project's remix album released a few months ago too. That's followed up by Mateo & Matos' "Hisa Beats"... a track that really just sets the stge to lay down what this series is all about! It kicks with the trademark Truby Trio beats in their remix to label mate Intuit's "Planet Birth". You find yourself groovin to this with the keys and broken beats as the whispy vocals preceed the soulful voice ove the lyrics. The real smoking track on this one though is the Danny Krivit remix to Diviniti's "Find a Way", an 8+ minute track that's got everything from beautiful harmonizing to dreamy breezes and blissful beats. Great track, great work and I was hooked. The album doesn't stop there either. Good tracks included songs by Ware, Infinity feat. Malik and house legend Kerri Chandler. Although, even though it's a very popular track, I never fell for Studio Apartment's "Flight"... don't like the backing/male sounding vocal.

Still, I have to recommend this - it's a great album. It does tend to wan into some heavier beats after New Music, which might take away from the jazz-house vibe some may prefer. But the strength of some of these tracks can carry it through and it was great to hear some of Truby's works again in a compilation. Check it out! And if you do dig this, check out another compilation titled Jazz House vol 14, Break & Bossa vol 7, Ananda Project's "Re-Light", Bargrooves: Espace Prive and Danny Krivit's "In the House" triple disc set. Good house and good, soulful jazz house.
