Editorial Reviews

Review

"the book lives up to its billing as a practical guide"-"doing more with less, generating ideas and mixing colors are among the interesting sub-topics"-"those who often have mused that certain pieces seem to be randomly generated will find a deeper meaning in this study of expression."  Hollywood Book Festival Review

2.0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment December 29, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you are really new to painting in general and acrylics in specific, this might be a good book for you. But for the person who has a modest amount of knowledge about handling the medium and understands color theory, you will find this book very thin on concrete concepts to developing non-representational art (or even abstracting representational art). It is not at all what I expected.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abstract Painting: A Practical Approach indeed! February 10, 2012
Format:Paperback
Hennie Reimer's recent book, Abstract Painting: A Practical Approach, is truly a treasure for anyone interested in mastering the creative processes necessary to produce fine art. Abstract art is not simply the result of random marks, but is based on an underlying order created through conscious effort and problem solving.

Reimer's unique approach to abstract painting distils the important lessons and wisdom gleaned from the great innovative thinkers in abstract design theory, including Arnheim, Birrin, Gombrich, and dozens more. She has honed these ideas through years of experience in the direct creation of abstract art. More importantly, she is able to disseminate these concepts to others due to the many years she has spent teaching fine art at the collegiate level. The result is a mature approach to teaching abstract painting based on time-tested methods that have proven to be effective.

Reimer has crafted a series of important lessons designed to build a solid foundation. She shows how to master the tools, techniques, and concepts needed to learn the complexities of color theory, tonal values, and design structure. Her book is lavishly illustrated in full color and contains numerous effective lessons to teach the reader how to develop abstract ideas, how to deal with design issues, and what to do when they encounter obstacles.

In spite of the fact that I paint in a realistic manner, early on I learned that my artwork would be more powerful when my compositions were based on abstract design principles and color theories. If Hennie Reimer's book was available back then, I could have shaved several years off my learning curve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art as a Projective February 23, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
As a Psychologist and an Artist, I know that Art is a portrait of our soul and explores one's inner life. It is clearly a projective both for the artist and the viewer. The blank canvas reflects our entire life and the finished product reflects our existent state. Hennie Reimer's book is not only full of techniques that are useful for artists of all levels, but it also gives you insight into this author's personality and spirit. It is a reflection of the gentleness of her spirit and the discipline of her profession. This is a must book for all artists. It is one you will review over and over. It is one from which you will take with you many new techniques that will refine your existing work. Don't wait another day.Abstract Painting, A Practical Approach

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for beginners August 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a good book for those who are new to art and don't understand color theory, composition, and design. As an experienced artist, this book wasn't what I was looking for.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nope June 21, 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
Too basic, no pictures. It is a long string of words, nothing new or enduring or interesting. At least, for me.

I liked the assignments of the abstract art .
There wasn't enough about abstract painting ideas. Too much about realistic painting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Abstract Painting: A Practical Approach January 27, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a wonderful book consisting of many helpful techniques. As a beginning painter, and having only been involved in watercolor classes, Hennie's book gives me many ideas to explore. She explains her techniques very well. And the inclusion of her own personal experiences with art, calligraphy, etc. make her book a very interesting read. Even though my early classes gave me good instruction on color mixing, it has been extremely helpful to have all of that fully explained again and demonstrated in her book.
