4.0 out of 5 stars Book for genealogists, May 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Abstracts of sales of confiscated Loyalists' land and property in North Carolina
This book contains abstracts of loose records relating to sales of tory property which was confiscated by county committees in North Carolina during the Revolutionary War. Included are the sale or rental of land, sale or rental of slaves, & information about collection of debts owed to tory merchants. Because of the nature of the material, there is more information about the buyer (usually a patriot) than about the tory. So we learn the selling price of the land or amount of the debt, but not always what the debt was about in the first place. Most of these loose records were retained the North Carolina's Treasurer or Comptroller; some were retained by the Secretary of State or by the county.
