I have the STX, paid full retail for it and love it, 11bb and corrosion resistant with an aluminum body. This reel, the Black Max, is lighter, made of graphite, not corrosion resistant, but I cannot tell the difference between the amount of bearings. Only thing I can see is that the reel seat seems a bit flimsy, compared to aluminum. But, I do not plan landing a 100 lb. fish with this either (would be great!) So, I should have bought four or five of these, and had them all spooled up differently and ready to go. The other difference between the two reels, the STX is made in Korea, this one is made in China. Great reel, great price.

I was very exited to see a revamp of the Max series reels on the Abu garcia website. I owned a last generation black and silver max and I enjoyed those very much. So when I got the opportunity to get a new one I was very happy.

With a bent drag star, and a bent handle design the reel itself is much more compact than last generation. It is very smooth to reel and feels good in my hands.

Other than that it is almost identical the the older models. Most of the innards are the same. same gear ratio, same magnetic brakes, same spool design, alot is the same.

It also feels ever so slightly cheap. I'm not exactly sure how to describe it, but the outside looks a little plasticky kinda cheap feeling. the tension knob dosen't feel as....precise as the old model, the mag brakes don't seem as good as last years model eaither. One thing I really do miss though is the flipping switch of the older generation. Now only the new silver max will have it. But I can cast without it.

But overall I do like this reel. For 50$ you cant go wrong, and Abu Garcia manages to make quality products for cheap. I would definanly suggest this item as a first baitcaster, or a more expirienced fisherman looking for a cheap reel to round out thier collection. If it wasn't for those few small negatives this reel would be a 5/5. But overall this is a good, quality, cheap reel.

I messed up a lot of power pro line with braid knots at first. Switched to reg fishing line and had the same problem. Adjusted the braking system and still had the same problem. Told my wife i was going to take it to the Goodwell until later that night i put on a 2 ounce sinker and it worked like a charm. This reel is not for small lures like DOA shrimp. I use it as a bottom fishing reel and it works fine. not the strongest drag but it works well enough.
