A little bit of History,
By WILLIAM. J. SCHARF (Cleveland Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Abu Hassan (Audio CD)
I waited a long time before finally getting this CD. First of all the performance is delightful. The chance to hear the very young Elizabeth Schwarzkopf and the veteran basso Michael Bohnen is in itself a thrill. The sound is excellent for the wartime recording in Berlin in 1941 and is an example of the early use of the tape recorder. Erich Witte, the tenor, was later a mainstay at the Berlin Staatsoper. Needless to say, I liked this recording and recommend it with no qualification to anyone interested in vocal history and hearing young artists with one who soon would be retiring after years of being on operatic stages around the world. The opportunity to hear Michael Bohnen is worth the price of this CD alone. For all Schwarzkopf fans this is an opportunity to hear her at the very onset of her long and fabulous career. Weber's little comic opera is done to a turn. Also on my CD is the Cantata Op. 44 "Battle and Victory".
