Book Description

March 6, 2008
Toward the end of the Second World War the Russian and German armies met in a fierce struggle that pushed the front line across the Baltic States. Many people fled the fighting including a Latvian University professor and his family. With a few mementos and the clothes on their backs they traveled to Berlin. They reassured themselves that the fighting would be over in a few months and they would return to their small country by the amber sea.Although they lost a great deal-this story has more to do with what they found. In Berlin during heavy allied bombing, in displaced persons camps in Germany and their early years in South Dakota the kindness of strangers seemed heaven sent. In their most fearful hours when life itself was in the balance hands reached out to help them. In ways large and small their blessings accumulated and gave them hope.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Poignant and Inspiring Memoir, December 3, 2008
By

This review is from: An Abundance of Blessings (Paperback)
This poignant and tender memoir is a joy to read. Its affirmation of all that is good and kind in the human spirit is inspiring in a quiet and unassuming way. The Pogainis family emerges through the eyes of little Ina as towering giants of inner strength, compassion and love as they overcome obstacles those of us who are not immigrants can only imagine. The challenges of war, separation, unemployment, poverty, and loss are confronted with a graceful resolution and grit that provide true sustenance to those of us starving in a world too often lacking in a sense of the value of hard work and the importance of family and community.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great For All Ages, December 11, 2010

This review is from: An Abundance of Blessings (Paperback)
This book is fast, enjoyable reading for all ages. Youngsters can learn about how life was years ago and older people can relate to those "olden days". It tells of real life struggles, relaxed fun and a trust in God to protect them and carry them through the bad times.

This book was very well and lovingly done and was particularly a pleasure for me to read because I knew the author many years ago when I was one of her teachers.
