5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspirational Guide to Slowing Down June 6, 2014
By Amy
Format:Kindle Edition
"The Abundant Mama's Guide to Savoring Slow," subtitled "Simplify, Embrace the Chaos and Discover an Abundance of Time at Home," by Shawn Fink, is a well-written, concise, and clear book, which can easily be read by busy mothers over the course of a day or cherished slowly over the course of a year. Shawn's intention is to show mothers a different path -- one in which they, and their families, can choose to slow down and cherish the moments before those moments are so suddenly gone. However, instead of focusing on how the world we live in today moves at the speed of light, Shawn highlights the ways in which we can actively decide to change our habits so that we have more time to live, to enjoy, to savor the good that life has to offer.

Writing from a real world perspective, and without advocating the removal of all technological devices, Shawn knows that mothers usually put themselves last on their agendas so she starts the book off by addressing this topic. She also gives us tips on how to get our families on board with the concept of slowing down. From there, Shawn introduces 12 "Savoring Slow Habits," which include, in part, "Do Less," "Go Quiet," "Abundance," and "Make Space." These 12 habits can be introduced slowly over the span of a year, such that families are eased into making changes; however, these are not major changes to make. Instead, they are changes that families looking to slow down and enjoy life will be willing to embrace. Included within each chapter are "Savoring Slow Invitations," in which Shawn invites you to try an activity, think about some questions, or journal your thoughts on a topic.

This book is beautifully written and captures the delight of life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! June 6, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is a refreshing book that comes at a time when everybody is pushed to do more, buy more, be more, etc. It is a wonderful reminder that we really don't need more. We really just need to be. Some of my best childhood memories are of simple things that the author describes in this book, not of any of the presents I received or clothes that I wore. The book comes at a perfect time, just as summer is coming upon us, when we feel the need to put our children in summer camps and sign them up for a bunch of things just so that they aren't bored. I love how the author gives specific examples of what to do, and there are also little prompts that are mini "assignments" to keep you on track and to get you thinking. This is a great book for any mama (or dad!) who is looking to lead a slower, more balanced life, showing your kids what is really important in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reminds us that we choose how busy we are. June 5, 2014

This is a great, quick read to really put things in perspective when we need it most. If you are feeling overwhelmed, tired, or frustrated that you aren't able to do everything in a day, week, or weekend, this book is for you.

As parents we overload our kids schedules and our own, afraid of "missing out" but the reality is, we are already missing out... rushing from one thing to the next and not fully enjoying any one activity or moment in time. The author provides simple, everyday changes we can make to truly savor what is important to us and find more time in our day. If you can find 15 minutes a day to read this, you will find much more time once you start putting the ideas into action!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, and applicable in daily life! June 8, 2014

Shawn does a great job with this book, to break down and provide a way for the reader to define their own ideal slow days. She gives suggestions and examples, and does it all in a way that made me feel like, "this is totally do-able", "I can do this". I loved the overall theme of this book: slowing down and really enjoying what is most important in life. I think we could all use a little of this in our world today, and, with summer coming up, it's a perfect time to start implementing the ideas in this book. Totally recommend this book, and well worth the $9.99!!!
